The Catechism on this issue

2396 Among the sins gravely contrary to chastity are masturbation, fornication, pornography, and homosexual practices.

2357 Homosexuality refers to relations between men or between women who experience an exclusive or predominant sexual attraction toward persons of the same sex. It has taken a great variety of forms through the centuries and in different cultures. Its psychological genesis remains largely unexplained. Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity, tradition has always declared that “homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered.” They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved.

2358 The number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies is not negligible. This inclination, which is objectively disordered, constitutes for most of them a trial. Everyone deserves to be treated with love. There is a difference between loving everyone and agreeing with everything they do. For example, I love my mother with all of my heart. However, she is not Catholic. There are some Church Traditions with which she disagrees. That doesn’t mean that I love her any less or treat her poorly because of that opinion.

The Catholic Church has maintained that homosexuality is intrinsically disordered.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church states the following -

2358 The number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies is not negligible. This inclination, which is objectively disordered, constitutes for most of them a trial. I don’t know if you are married or not. What if you had a son or daughter who became a drug addict and then committed violent crimes to get money for the addiction. Would you hate your child because of their action or would you love your child but hate their action and try to help them to overcome their problem?

“Liking” and “loving” are very different things. We are not morally obliged to “like” anyone; certainly nor to affirm his way of life. Nor are we obliged to facilitate anyone’s ability to do something wrong.

Regarding hatred in general–to hate another person means you are despising the image of God in them. As Christ says, “whatever you do to the least of my brethren you do to me.” Across the board and regardless of context, to hate another person is to hate Christ, pure and simple.

It is incumbent upon you to love homosexual people. As a Roman Catholic, you are bound to accept the teaching of the catechism in this regard: homosexual people are not sinful by virtue of being homosexual–but re: homosexual acts, the catechism states that anyone (whether or not they are homosexual) sins by engaging in them. The difference that must be grasped is between homosexuality as an affective condition (which condition is not sinful), and homosexual acts (which the Roman Catholic church views as sinful).

Are you a bad Catholic? Of that I cannot judge. But the catechism suggests that an attitude distinguishing between the condition and the act in this regard is an attitude required of all good Catholics.

You have given yourself a great and horrible burden in permitting yourself to hate others. But accepting the grace to overcome that burden will be a great blessing, I’m sure.

That’s a good point, Ridge. I wonder if he thinks about it, it’s more a hate of the sin than the sinner… …which is entirely consistant with Catholic moral teachings.

I cant stand the idea of two guys getting “intimate” with each other I think its nasty, but I dont think that homosexuality is necessarily a sin just because i dont like it or because of what God or tradition has to say. Thats just my opinion perhaps it will change in the future but as of now thats my opinion. Your free to feel anyway against a group of people as long as you dont commit violence against someone or condone the use of violence against someone for who they are.

I keep hearing Father Santan Pinto, SOLT, saying to a group of us Disciples in Formation, " Your opinion does not matter." What a shock to a bunch of relativists who came of age in the sixties and seventies. But he is right. My opinion about gay marriage and your opinion or feelings about gay marriage don’t matter.

Truth matters. God created us male and female. He told us to be fruitful and multiply. While it is my duty to love others as Jesus loved me, this does not mean I have to condone people’s sins. They are not required to condone my sins either.

My feelings or opinions about the sinful acts of homosexuals (or heterosexuals outside of marriage) does not release me from Jesus’s command to love others as Jesus loves me.

This is why we need the Holy Spirit’s help.

Homosexuality is just another example of a sin having it’s own support group.

Abortion is another sin with its own support group.

My problem is: I can’t see the balance between loving the sinner and hating the horrendiously deprived sin.

Especially in a society and culture that says if you say ANYTHING against homosexuality, you are evil, you are wrong, and you are a bigot.

Do you see the flaw in your logic here – that you don’t think something is a sin despite what God says about it? The very definition of sin is an act which goes against God’s wishes, friend!

God has, indeed, revealed to us what He thinks about homosexual acts – both through His inspiration of the writers of Scripture AND through His inspiration of the Church. Morality is not subjective; it is subject to an absolute standard, which is set by God through his Church.

That said, we must treat and regard homosexuals with Christian charity at all times, which includes opposing the actions they embrace and admonishing – NOT condemning – the sinner.
