Parents –

Have you seen “genaric” permission slips sent home from your children’s schools, and if so, have you signed them?

I blogged about this a bit, but, to make a long story short, my children’s school has sent home permission slips to cover all PTA-sponsored field trips, without any indication of where of when the field trips will take place.

To me, the idea that some parents are signing such forms is frightening. Who knows where some “progressive” teacher might decide to take the children?

While I doubt there are many elementary school teachers scheduling field trips to the local drag shows (let’s please keep our heads screwed on here) it also makes no sense to sign a blank permission slip under any circumstances. The expediency never trumps common sense. If we employ ours and simply request details/specificity and maybe even the opportunity to chaperone before signing any permissions–wham, bam problem solved without any need to push the “liberal agenda” panic button.

I would definitely be concerned. You never know what indoctrination that they will take the kids to. Demand, do not ask, for a permission slip for each field trip. You have the right, according to Federal Law, to opt out of anything you deem objectionable.

Not many, I’m sure, but I have heard of children being introduced to “health experts” of sorts, and there is always the questionable art exhibit. My parents had to fight tooth-and-nail to keep my Catholic elementary school from showing PG-rated films without parental approval (thereby removing any opportunity for Parental Guidance). One of the films was “The Outsiders,” which contains sexual references as well as gang violence.

I wrote the school a “form letter” of my own for each child, explaining that I was declining to sign the form and why. There were no problems as a result. It just puzzles me that enough parents are willing to sign such a form to make it worth sending home. Don’t other parents think about these things?
