I was mainly referring to the nineteenth century, especially prior to the 1840s. It was only after that time that married women could begin to own property, and it wasn’t until 1920 that we could vote.
It’s been a mixed bag for women throughout history. This isn’t true for all times and places.

And this is the reason why to be a woman it can be very confusing. At one time woman couldn’t vote and now we can. This is confusing. In parts of the world woman have to cover themselves head to toe but in other parts they walk around half naked. This is confusing. All of the US presidents and Vice Presidents have been males but now they want a woman president. This is confusing. At one time woman weren’t forced to work outside of the home such as in the Middle East women can’t go into public without a male escort. This is confusing. For men things have largely been consistent. For women it is so mixed up and ever changing. Women don’t know what is exactly right or what isn’t. What is expected and what isn’t. What is normal and what isn’t. Things have changed for women so much in history so it is confusing. Also, men say they look for intellect and personality but others just go for physical appearance. It’s all confusing. Young women are growing up confused as to what it means to be a woman. Especially in some countries where women get treated as a slight failures and with pity for being 30+ childless single and unmarried, even if they have a great career. It is all very confusing. It causes one to spend a great deal of their time in deep deep thought.

In some parts of the world this is still commonplace. I guess this would grounds for annulment when you got married due to being kidnapped and then forced to get married.

When things change for women in a society, they also change for men.

Men used to be able to get away with a certain attitudes that are no longer acceptable. They’ve had to adjust their expectations and behaviors in the home, in the workplace, and beyond. They don’t know when what they consider flirting is acceptable and when it will get them fired.

Men have to figure out what their new roles and responsibilities with the children and the home are, now that women are more frequently in the workplace and rightfully expect a new balance.

As human beings, most of us are pretty adaptable and flexible. Being confused about societal expectations is not the same thing as being confused about being a woman.
