Brethren,
Here is how the New Jerusalem Bible (1985) renders Genesis 14:13:
“A survivor came to tell Abram, and Aner the Hebrew, who was living at the Oak of the Amorite Mamre, the brother of Eshcol; these were allies of Abram.”
Who’s “the Hebrew” here, Abram or Aner? Is Mamre or Aner Eshcol’s brother?
This has just GOT to be a missprint!
Cf. the RSV:
“Then one who had escaped came, and told Abram the Hebrew, who was living by the oaks of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol and of Aner; these were allies of Abram.”
