Hello every one, it is nice to meet you all.

I come here to ask a serious question, in which i hope to receive a humble and sound opinion which will help me in writing a college research paper.

The question that i am currently seeking opinions of, is this: Is it Morally and/or Ethically okay for genetic engineering and furthermore Designer Babies to come about?

I’ll respect all opinions here and i hope that my question is answered thoughtfully, because i mean no disrespect if any is taken.

Are these babies concieved in a petri dish or test tube and then implanted in the womb via IVF?
If the the awnser is yes…then NO it is not ethical or moral.
I suggest you read HUMANAE VITAE

Nurkinn, If you are prepared to read a long article entitled, “Moral Discernment and Culpability” at lifeissues.net/writers/fla/fla_01moraldiscernment.html

you will be better prepared to answer the question yourself. The Life Issues website has excellent section on bioethics. I highly recommend Dianne Irving who is a professor trained in biology and philosophy. She can provide you with a strong scientific basis for the dignity of life from the moment of conception and she can defend the personhood of the unborn from a moral point of view too. It takes a while to absorb all the scientific jargon but well worth the effort to appreciate the basics of human embryology. 👍

The Charter for HealthCare Workers might interest you too.

For concrete examples, please watch the movie Gattaca with Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman and Jude Law. I think it paints a pretty realistic picture of what would befall our society if we began to allow “designer babies”, and it will allow you to see for yourself why it would most certainly NOT be moral for us to use genetic engineering in this way.

Genetic engineering for eugenic purposes (and let’s face it, that’s what this “designer babies” thing would become, ignores the value of the human person, especially from a spiritual standpoint, and reduces the value of our lives to our genetic perfection.

Ask yourself: what would happen to people who are not designer babies? How would they fit into society in relation to a genetic elite? What happens to unborn children who are imperfect?

Good luck with your research for your essay.

This is one reason why dh and I are increasingly attracted to the Catholic Church- because of the Magesteriums consistent teaching on the dignity of the human person and right to life from conception through natural death.
Gattica is an good movie to watch on this subject and
Brave New World is a good book to read on this subject
