I had the privilege to meet a rather awesome Catholic last week - we were installing a WiFi system in a Catholic parish school and as we got to know each other we talked about our various faith experiences - the gentleman is goes to an FSSP parish, is very devout, and is a well spring of knowledge and faith.
It came out that I am a member of a Masonic lodge when I talked the irony of the Masonic oath to frequent the house of worship has actually led me away from Masonry - as I’ve gotten deeper into the Christian faith.
Here’s what he did right:
From an apologetic stand point - he did everything right. He pushed and prodded in the right direction and yet didn’t burn down any bridges - I’ll be comfortable talking about the subject later with him, and I’m considering his points well.

Here’s what he did right:
- He didn’t freak out and try to immediately burn me at the stake.
- He mentioned the oaths and others silly nonsense that is in Masonry, but when he could see that bit of Masonic silliness didn’t trouble me - he stopped.
- He remained kind and nice to me, - even though from his standpoint I was dabbling in the occult.
- He pointed out that Masonry could leas to religious indifference, and with more conversation, he found out that I’m unhappy with how Masonry provides just enough pomp and ritual that it can be just enough pseudo-religion to keep people from needing the church.
