Geocentrism

I have been reading through some of the Scripture Catholic website, and while I believe a lot of it is really good, there is one thing that shocked me, and that is that apparently the author appears to believe in geocentrism.

It seems clear to me that heliocentrism has been proved quite convincingly. Is the Church’s teaching still that the sun revolves around the earth?

Is science infallible on its teachings? I think even you know science has never been perfect and still has alot of questions left unanswered. Neither Heliocentrism or Geocentrism has ever been proven indefinitely. I think Scripture Catholic’s author is merely trying to prove the implicit and explicit understanding of the Church’s stance on such teachings:

Should we interpret the Scriptures literally? The Catholic Church, having adopted the rule of St. Augustine, teaches “not to depart from the literal and obvious sense, except only where reason makes it untenable or necessity requires; a rule to which it is the more necessary to adhere strictly in these times, when the thirst for novelty and unrestrained freedom of thought make the danger of error most real and proximate.” Pope Leo XIII, Providentissimus Deus, No. 15, 1893. This was affirmed by Pope Pius XII in Humani Generis, No. 36, 1950.

Actually only a small sect of people, scientists included believed that the sun revolved around the earth. The three popes he is referring to is sort of stretch. Paul V merely asked that the heliocentric model be proven. Pope Urban VII was only in office for less than four months. Pope Alexander VII was the only one that mandated this be followed.

The Heliocentric model was dedicated to Pope Paul III by Copernicus. Pope Benedict XIV suspended the ban after it was further supported by Isaac Newton’s work. Pope Pius VII further supported this by approving a decree.

So there are three Popes approving heliocentrism and really only one who didn’t.

On scripture Catholic, the guy does say he doesn’t really have any authority, he mentions himself; “I am a faithful Catholic, not a scientist.”
