Is is true that he is not in communion with the Holy See? I heard this somewhere… I find it hard to believe after listening to his conversion story.

It is my understanding that Gerry Matatics has embraced the view that Benedict XVI is not a validly elected pope.

Do you have a source document that we can read?

It’s in the link I posted…At least, it’s a statement from him…

Peace be with you!

Wow…I didn’t realize Gerry Matatics had gone off the deep end. I did like Bob Sungenis’ reply to that, though. Good job, Bob! (Edited off topic comment) I also hope Gerry comes to realize the error of his ways.

If you take a read through this, you’ll see why I’m not holding my breath about a reconcilliation…

Wow - that is really sad. 😦

You know, the final straw in my rejection of Protestantism was that I cannot believe in a god who would, without exception, condemn to hell all Native Americans who did not come into contact with missionaries for a millenium and a half. Seems like Gerry has gone over to that position with his “no exceptions” philosophy.

It is summed up in his pretty arrogant statement on his website, that [to the readers] your salvation may depend on whether or not you have access to the materials in his newly constructed St. Jerome Study Center.

I’ll pray for the man. I wonder what Scott Hahn is feeling over this? Probably pretty distraught. 😦

This is really sad. As a person who also converted from Presbyterianism (lapsed in my case unlike Gerry’s until he converted) to the Catholic Church some 7-8 years ago, reading all about Gerry’s conversion and his persuasive logic was an important factor in helping me understand the true faith when I was discerning conversion. While like Gerry I attend the traditional mass, it is the authority of the Church and of the Holy Father which was even more important in my conversion. I will pray for him, but he looks as if he has totally flipped.

I met Gerry and spent a few hours in coversation with him about two years ago at a conference he was giving in Portland, OR. At that time I tried to pin him down on a few issues that concerned me about some of the stuff that he has said. At that time it seemed to me that he was back in union with the Church. However, in recent times has has indeed gone into another form of schism. I too find it very unfortunate because he is a brilliant man in his work. It seems to me that he may be suffering from a form of scupulosity that when combined with such an intellect can be a very disasterous thing.

A quote from Gerry’s site I found,
In the meantime, I don’t believe in standing still or in wasting time waiting, so we’ll continue working with what we’ve got. A list of courses currently available at the Center appears below. The information in these various disciplines is crucial to decoding the current crisis, and to spiritually surviving the great apostasy with our Catholic Faith intact. This educational enterprise couldn’t be timelier: during this eventful year of 2005 *several *dramatic developments occurred, each of which has convinced me that the need for this Center, with the mission-critical data it can deliver, is now more urgent than ever.

I’ll elaborate on these aforementioned events in my next letter. Meanwhile, please consider coming to the St. Jerome Study Center and digging more deeply into your Catholic Faith with me. Your salvation, humanly speaking, might well depend upon it. As Pope St. Pius X, quoting his predecessor Benedict XIV, solemnly stated, “We declare that a great number of those who are condemned to eternal punishment suffer that everlasting calamity because of ignorance of those mysteries of faith which must be known and believed in order to be numbered among the elect” (Acerbo Nimis, paragraph 2, issued April 15, 1905). “My people perish for lack of knowledge,” was the way God put it in Hosea 4:6.

Yep, it would appear Gerry has become his own interpreter of Tradition. No use for a Magisterium in his view other than the one of a century ago, supposed proclamations of which he has no doubt taken out of context.

I myself originally converted to Christianity and Catholicism in particular because of a God who wouldn’t condemn those souls in distant lands only because missionaries failed to reach them, alot of which wouldn’t found until Christopher Columbus discovered them nearly 1500 years after the gospel of Christ was first proclaimed.

I wonder if Gerry considers those of us who follow Benedict XVI to actually be Catholic in his eyes? And are we even eligible for salvation if we don’t attend his courses at his St. Jerome Study Center and be indoctrinated by them?

Is it possible that Gerry Matatics is actually a false convert to the Catholic Faith with the intention all along of getting inside just to try to destroy us?

While I can’t condone anyone becoming their own private interpreter of Tradition, I can understand why Gerry and others are confused. Have you ever read any of Pope Benedict XVI’s books, which he wrote as Cardinal Ratzinger? He seems like a really nice man, but he says some strange things in his books. In one (and I don’t have them with me, I’m at work) he says that the Vatican Council I’s solemn definitions of Papal Infallibility and Universal Jurisdiction (of the pope) are historical developments and ought not be required of the Eastern Orthodox to believe in them in order for reunion to take place. In his INTRODUCTION TO CHRISTIANITY, at the very end of the book, he goes on for several pages insisting that the Resurrection has nothing “at all” to do with the restoration of bodies to souls after a long interval. What does he mean by such statements? I don’t know, but I do know that the resurrection of our BODIES is a dogma of the Catholic faith. So I can understand why Matatics and others are put off by the magisterium in recent years. Of course, that doesn’t justify anyone becoming a private interpreter of Tradition.

As for Gerry Matatics converting with the deliberate intention of destroying the Church, that is just patently ridiculous.

God bless,

No, I don’t think that’s the case. He pinned James White down in a debate on sola scriptura a while back. Also, if he were a false convert, he would no doubt have fallen back to Protestantism rather than the sedevacantist position.

That is the big problem with the schismatics. Those who really do not believe in invincible ignorance, yet have schismatic churches with an incredibly small membership. For instance, I am sure that “Pope Michael I” in Missouri believes in a very hardline stance of extra ecclesia nulla salus… which would mean everyone living right now is going to hell, with the exception of 10 people in Missouri.

Just a small correction: Pope Michael is located in Delia, Kansas!

Call me a pessimist, but I believe I’m hopeful based upon experience.

I realize there are exceptions, but I am quite positive that Gerry is beyond turning back from what he believes is true. He is the type of person that doesn’t just “go on a whim.” He is convinced that what he believes is what every Roman Catholic, and every person, ought to believe.

His apologetics, I suspect, will not go down in quality, as far as being convincing. But he will be less of a mainstream type guy. At least for a while.

His story seems to indicate he was a pretty militant anti-Catholic before his conversion. Maybe it’s just his way no matter which church he’s in.

I hope it’s not as bad as it seems.
