I have a few of his tapes from years ago but I don’t have anything recently. I like what he said in those tapes.

I think he’s sound. He can be challenging and rigorous but that is no bad thing.

He started out pretty orthodox but then kind of went off the deep end. I guess he could be considered a far-right Catholic, a Rad Trad. The only place I ever seem him anymore is in the the schismatic Catholic Family Newspaper I get now and again.

When he learned Scott Hahn was considering Catholicism he remarked “Much learning hath made you Mad!” Sadly, it now applies to him. I loved his conversion story and he’s quite the funny guy.

I believe Gerry Matatics, a former Presbyterian minister turned Catholic, has already cast his lot with the extreme Traditionalists of the SSPX variety.

Gerry 🙂

I didn’t know he went that far right but I know he and Mr Karl Keating have completely split he used to work for catholic answers. I assume his moving to the more catholic than the pope crowd was among their diagreements. Too Bad Matatics was a good apologetics guy when he first converted. I know the problems of the post Vatican 2 church can drive people over the edge a little but the SSPX?
I am dissapointed.

He’s got a great sense of humour. I still have some of his tapes. i do disagree with his idea\ that JP II is a wolf in sheeps clothing though…

John Loughnan’s sitehas a listing of sedevacantist, and other integrist websites, and lists Gerry Matatics’ site under the “Not in obedience to the Pope” category.

Gerry 🙂

John of Woking:
Any Opinions on this Theologian?
Here’s an interview by the Saint Benedict Center, supporters of Fr. Feeney and are not in obedience to the Pope, with Gerry Matatics. Read and judge for yourself:

catholicism.org/pages/matatic.htm

They’re close friends with Scott Hahn when he was still a Protestant. He even came earlier into the faith than Scott…but then he went to where he is now. Their debates with James White are fiery though.

Peace, so be it.

Thanks. I am new to this forum and did not know how to do a search. With your suggestion, I did the search and got what I needed. Thanks.

I think we have to be careful and understanding when judging a person like Gerry Matatics.

The sede vacantist groups are a nuisance and can be very unpleasant (I know because I was one of a number of Catholics who tried to debate them on another Catholic discussion site and they became so unpleasant that the site ended up closing down and reopening with them banned!).

However, as an ex Protestant myself, I can understand how a man of faith like Gerry Matatics could discover the Catholic faith, join the Church, then find out that some of the most violent anti Catholics are INSIDE the Church, in the disguise of bishops, priests and nuns. For converts the treason inside the Church is a great tragedy.

We need to pray for Gerry, if he is leaning towards the sede vacantist position, that he will come to realise that only by remaining within the Church can he be faithful to the Catholic faith.

I have actually learned since my last post on this thread that he is actually a schismatic. I think I may have been thinking of Sungenis when saying he was FSSP. Anyway, Sungenis and him are going to debate the legitimacy of the New Mass this fall. Hopefully Sungenis crushes him. Here is the ad from Sungenis’s site.

Robert Sungenis vs Gerry Matatics

I am totally with you bruv, too many people are criticizing matatics and sungenis, but the only reason they may appear extreme is simply a reflection how liberal the church is today. As a revert back to Catholicism I can only say that Sungenis and Matatics have blessed me abundantly, we need people like them in the Church. They are a blessing…

God Bless Gerry Matatics and Robert Sungenis

I went to your link. It is definitely a snazzy and well done site, but the fact that they are even debating this subject alienates both of them from my circle of Catholic apologetics I trust.
That doesn’t make sense. How does it alienate Sungenis if he is defending the new mass? That makes zero sense.
