I was wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction towards how to get a doctorate in Catholic Theology in one of the colleges in Los Angeles county.

What would be the suggested Bachelor’s degree requirement?
The Master’s degree requirement?
GPA requirements?

Any other info would be appreciated; thanks 🙂

How many colleges in LA offer a doctorate in Catholic theology? It cannot be very many. You can ask them yourself.

A quick Google search turns up zero. The only California school offering doctorate in Catholic Theology is In Santa Clara.

I would have thought LMU but no.

One step at a time. Bachelor’s in theology or philosophy. Almost every college has a degree in philosophy.

You really need to first identify the school you would like to get a doctorate from and see what their requirements are.

The requirements would also be different depending on whether you are going for a DMin, PhD, or STD. For an STD (which is a pontifical degree), the requirements are more stringent, and there are fewer schools you can go to.

There are many schools where you can get a master’s in theology even if your bachelor’s degree is completely unrelated (that’s what I did). You will just probably have to take a few “catch up” classes to make up for the fact that your bachelor’s degree is in another field. I cannot imagine any doctoral program letting you straight in without having a related master’s degree, though.

Exactly.

Go to the best undergraduate university you can afford to attend (if that means going to a state school that is fine). Major in theology, philsophy, or even history. Focus, work hard, and get the best grades you can. Establish good relationships with your professors who will need to write letters of recommendation for graduate school.

I have an undergraduate degree from there . . . (back when they used both USC and SCU m. . .)

Doesn’t the Berkeley Theological Union offer one? Or, now that I think of it, isn’t that run through Santa Clara these days, anyway
