I hope this is the right forum to post this on. My husband and I are starting RCIA in a few weeks (my classes are at a local church, while he’s taking classes while deployed in Iraq.) In any case, I was wondering about ‘valid’ marriage, what that means, etc. We were married, as teenagers, by the ‘justice of the peace’ down at the courthouse, almost 14 years ago. Since it was a civil thing, and not a church wedding, what exactly do we do to get it ‘blessed?’ What exactly is the status of those converting who were married by civil but not ecclesiastical authority? I’m a little confused on all this, and I’d appreciate any information and advice from anyone. Thanks.
