I hope this is the right forum to post this on. My husband and I are starting RCIA in a few weeks (my classes are at a local church, while he’s taking classes while deployed in Iraq.) In any case, I was wondering about ‘valid’ marriage, what that means, etc. We were married, as teenagers, by the ‘justice of the peace’ down at the courthouse, almost 14 years ago. Since it was a civil thing, and not a church wedding, what exactly do we do to get it ‘blessed?’ What exactly is the status of those converting who were married by civil but not ecclesiastical authority? I’m a little confused on all this, and I’d appreciate any information and advice from anyone. 🙂 Thanks.

I assume:
  1. Neither of you were married before.
  2. Neither of you were Catholic at the time of the marriage.
In that case I doubt that you will need to do anything

However, every case is unique [as we say your milage may vary]; so be sure to discuss this with a priest.

I agree with Joe Kelley. You probably won’t need to do anything special, except do get in touch with your parish priest. He may have you wait until after you complete RCIA. “Blessing” or convalidating your marriage simply means having your marriage received as a sacrament in the church. God Bless and good luck,

Puppy

Thanks for the responses y’all. I’ll be sure to talk to my parish priest about it. 🙂
