I am new to the faith and have been in RCIA for about a month now, but I am joining the Church as soon as I can get through the program. Ours doesnt last a year and I have already been baptized so pray that it wont take too long!! Anyway, I wanted to know if I could get my children ages 8, 5, and 2 baptized when I join the Church. Or will they do it because of their age? Thanks for the help, God bless.

Hello and Welcome home, David!

Your 5 and 2 year old may be baptized at any time convenient to your priest. Since your 8 year old is beyond the age of reason (7 years old), he/she will need to go through a bit of Catholic religious education prior to being baptized. Speak to your priest to see what is the norm at your parish and perhaps you can have the three children all baptized at the same time when your 8 year old is ready. Your 8 year old is also at the age when children are typically studying for their First Communion and in the Latin Rite, will need to baptized prior to making his/her First Communion. Talk to Father and he’ll get you on the right path for your children.

God bless you!

make an appointment with your priest and discuss your entire family situation and he will direct you. You should have had a rather thorough interview when you entered the RCIA process (in case their are marriage issues to resolve, for instance). Children usually enter the church at the same time as their parents. Children over the age of reason will be prepared in a class with their peers, while their parents are in a class with other adults. Infants (under age 7) may be baptized sooner, but the usual practice is to receive families together.
