Getting my DD baptized - several questions

I am just now returning to the church after being away for several years after I converted in 2003. I have a nearly 2yo DD who I will be having baptized soon.

I need at least one god-parent, and I can’t think of anyone. My entire family is non-catholic, and when I attended mass regularly before it was a a college chapel, so most of the people I knew are now out of state and I’m not in touch with them any longer. So I’m in a bit of a predicament for finding a godparent. Any ideas?

And is there someplace online that outlines what happens in a child baptism? I’ve actually never seen one done since I attended a college mass before.

Look around you next time you go to Mass and see if there’s anyone you’ve noticed who seems devout and whom you would like your child to imitate. It might be a single person who would love nothing better than to have a child in his/her life. It might be doting grandparents who could offer their experience and help in your child’s religous upbringing. Then, ask your pastor what he things about your choice.

As for the actual baptism, here is how the rite usually progresses:

Parents are welcomed and asked what name they’ve given their child what they are asking for him/her.
Then they are told that by having their child baptized they are committing themselves to raise the child in the Faith and asked if they understand what they are undertaking.
Sponsor(s) is asked if they are ready to assist the parents in their task.
Child is then signed with the sign of the cross on the forehead by the priest and parents & sponsor(s) are invited to do the same.

There may be an anointing with the Oil of Catechumen, but that’s not required for children who will be baptized immediately so it may be left out in your parish.

Then the water is blessed, there is a renunciation of sins and the profession of faith.

Parents are asked if it is their wish that the child be baptized.

Child is baptized by pouring or immersion.

Child is anointed with the Sacred Chrism.

White garment is presented.

Baptismal candle, representing the Light of Christ, is presented.

Ephpheta Rite, blessing of ears and mouth, may be celebrated. It’s optional but in our parish we always do it.

All this may take place at a celebration outside of Mass or, as in our parish, celebrated during Mass. If it’s during Mass, the baptism itself happens after the homily. Everything may be done at that time or the welcoming may be at the door of the Church before Mass begins, then the rest after the homily.

There is a final blessing for the parents.
