Getting to know people in your parish?

How do you get to know people in your parish? I feel like since there are so many options/times for attending Mass, you may not see the same people. Also, we get a lot of visitors at my church so it’s hard to know who the regulars are. I’m in RCIA and I occasionally see some of my fellow catechumens/candidates at Church. I know Mass isn’t supposed to be social but it would be nice to make some new Catholic friends while I’m on this journey that I could get to know outside of Church.

When my wife and I went through RCIA last year we started going out for some food or a drink after our weekly classes. Or, we went out for breakfast once and a while after Mass. Pretty soon, several of us were hanging out on a regular basis. Our sponsors had everyone over to their place a few times which was very nice as well.

I would simply broach the idea of grabbing some food after Mass sometime and see if anyone is interested and take things from there.

Volunteer! Join Bible Studies and the choir. Sign up to help with religious ed. Volunteer to be a greeter or an usher. Do they have coffee and donuts after mass? Sign up to serve. A parish festival? Sign up to help.

Thanks for the suggestions. I actually haven’t heard about any volunteer opps but then again, I usually don’t take the paper bulletin on the way from Mass. I will see what’s available. But since I’m technically not a Catholic/member yet, can I still participate?

Also, RCIA is during the week and we haven’t done anything social after class yet.

After sunday mass are often some(or many) people talking outside of the church. You may just talk to them.

Unbaptized persons could probably in most of them. Maybe not altar server, lector, or CCD teacher, but probably the choir, greeter, or usher. It depends on the parish.

Start taking the bulletin and looking through it… There will be activities and programs you can volunteer for and go to. The parish where I went through RCIA had a very active Knights of Columbus council that put on a family fun day where we met several other parishoners and my kid got to meet some other kids. We also volunteered for the parish Christmas activity as townspeople in the recreation of Bethleham. There should be lots of opportunities for you.
