I have searched through all my books and information and cannot find an answer for a Baptist friend regarding giants in old testament history. My friend claims she heard a protestant TV preacher quoting scripture to prove that early giants were the product of fallen angels who had relations with women and the product being “giants”. (Such as the goliath who was defeated by David). As a Catholic, it is my understanding that angels do not have bodies so where could this idea have come from. Can anyone help me with this one? I am trying to find some scriptural basis for this protestant teaching. (My friend did not remember the scripture book and verse and also didn’t remember the speaker or program). Unless I heard it directly from the Catholic church, then I would not believe it anyway, but just trying to play detective and find out where this teaching comes from. Thanks…

I heard that as well when I went to a fundie school. Basically, it stems from the idea that Greek Gods had sex with mortal women & created demi-gods. We were taught, that that’s kind of true, in that it was demons and blah, blah, blah.

There are giants these days as well - ever watch the NBA? Think about how Yao Ming looks in his own country when the average height is like 4’11" LOL 😉

The word translated “giants” in the OT represents different Hebrew words, so a case-by-case approach to each appearance of the word is called for.

The Book of Jubilees (2nd century BC), & the First Book of Enoch, seem to be the literary source for the notion of angels lying with women. Jubilees was very popular among Christians for some time, so may well have been one source of the Christian continuation of the Jewish idea that the angels had bodies. The purely spiritual constitution of the angels was defined only in 1215 - many of the Fathers were rather reluctant to believe the angels were purely spiritual, because they feared lest this should make them seem too like God, and so endanger Christian certainty that He is Unique. ##
