I’m looking for some book ideas for my dad…Short profile: Lifetime Methodist, cultural and political conservative, traditional values, and here’s the paradox…over 30 years active in the local Masonic lodge. When I converted to Catholicism six years, he neither objected nor encouraged…He just asked if I was sure that was what I wanted do. Dad does seem to have only what I can describe as a general aversion to the Church. Nothing really specific, just an overall aversion. In credit, he has attend mass with my wife and kids several times, both Novus Ordo and Extraordinary, and I’ve even caught him listening to EWTN in his truck once. However, he does not ask questions about the Faith and says he has issues with some of the churches ideas. He won’t really go into detail about specifics, I think to avoid arguing. Basically, it’s difficult to talk about Catholicism with him because for some reason it makes him uncomfortable. I’m assuming he’s “stuck in his ways.” Also, I don’t want Catholicism to turn into a rift between us, more than it already has.
If I could only guess, and I do know my dad, it’s probably the kneeling, the icons everywhere, calling the priest “Father” and here’s the biggie–papal infallibility, especially because of some of the seemingly progressive ideas coming from our Pope and how it’s portrayed in the media.
Of course, everyone’s journey home is different. I think an appropriate book this Christmas could open the door for the Holy Spirit. Something for someone who is undecided about the faith, but evangelizes and clears up myths.
