As Easter nears, I’ve been trying to think of a suitable gift for my sponsor.

I am a 31 year old male and he is 25. I did not know him prior to joining RCIA (he was appointed to help me), but we have become pretty good friends. I know his likes and dislikes, what his hobbies are etc., but I was wondering if there’s some general guideline I should be following. For example, should it be Catholic related? I want to give him a gift that is related to the Church, but what do you give someone who’s been a Catholic their whole life? What is an appropriate amount to spend? etc.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

A book maybe? Some book from an author he likes? such as our Pope, or Scott Hahn or …you know.

My sponsor is a woman, I’m thinking of getting her a rosary or a book.

A heartfelt note would be nice.

If you have a good Catholic book store nearby, consider giving him a $15 gift card from that store – or a crucifix, if he doesn’t have one.

A Holy Spirit lapel pin is always appreciated. And if you get it blessed after your confirmation by the bishop, that would indeed be special!

A gift doesn’t have to be expensive, or too inexpensive.
  1. Check out these ideas from Aquinas and More – I like the keychain and lapel pin:

    and

  2. You could also get a holy card, statuette, or medal of your sponsor’s patron saint for him.
  3. I was fortunate enough that my finace (at the time) had cards printed up that included my name, the confirmation date, the bishop’s name, my sponsor’s name, and a quote from my patron saint. It’s a great announcement, keepsake, and your sponsor would truly appreciate it. It’s also nice to send to people who couldn’t attend. I think my husband got them from here: catholicshopper.com/products/personalized_holycards_confirmation.html
I hope this helps. Let us know what you choose to do, please?

I like the idea of getting him a medal for his patron saint. I just have to find out who that is, but that shouldn’t be too difficult.

By the way, I noticed you’re from the DC area. So am I! I live in Alexandria.

Thanks for the advice.

The restored original ’ Vilnius Image ’ of Divine Mercy is said to be the only painting of our Lord that was done at His request ( to St.Faustina ) and comes with promise of grace and blessings ( have also heard of instances of persons having recieved such blessings .)

This icon / painting seems to project a Fatherly dignity in our Lord and probably would appeal to persons of all ethnic identities !

Hope many more churches and homes would carry the Divine Mercy image and participate in The Feast of Mercy - all of it to help all grow in trust in our Lord , His Mercy and to become merciful and peaceful ourselves !

I’ve been part of the RCIA process for a few years and have been a sponsor a couple of times. I agree with the suggestion of a heart-felt note. Knowing that you made a difference in the life of another person really matters. Taking them out to dinner (or making dinner for your sponsor and his/her spouse) is also nice. You’ll get some quality time together and express your appreciation.

I also agree that a letter is a good “Thank You” gift. Scott Hahn books are definitely great. Or better yet see if Scott Hahn is coming to your area! In fact, I checked on this and he will be in Washington, D.C. on May 2 at the Navy Yard Chapel. You can check his website for more information. Also, statues of saints are always nice or paintings, etc. Icons are also a beautiful gift. Perhaps you can find a gift associated with his activities (Icon of patron saint for cooks, sailing, etc.). You could also have a Mass said for your sponsor. No matter what the gift is, I think the greatest gift is the fact that you are becoming Catholic. After all, the angels rejoice each time this occurs, and I am sure your sponsor is also rejoicing. May God continue to bless your journey!
