I remember when it was hard to get and I wish it was still like that.Let’s talk about “our culture” for a moment. Here’s a recent quote I saw on another forum: “Does anybody remember when porn was considered dirty and hard to get?” If you were in charge of cultural exchange for the US Government, what would you send to another country as examples of what “our culture” consists of? Would it include a box of various issues of Maxim, various SI Swimsuit issues and girly calendars?
I wouldn’t be surprised if Maxim would be sent in that box. Since America is such a melting pot it seems sometimes like the only consistency across nationalities is exploitation and fluff and filler. I’m from Texas so maybe we would send them a copy of Guns and Gardens. I almost fell out of my chair when I saw that magazine in an office.
I use it as a catch all phrase. It could apply to actually selling sex to an individual who gets physical sex in exchange for money, it could apply to people having sex being taped in some form or another then selling it, it could be many things. But I see what you’re saying and I agree with you 100% on it.The term “sex industry” is a fiction. It describes nothing. It obscures the reality of what is actually occurring.
The correct term should be “the sexual exploitation of women for money industry.” That is precise but cannot be used since it is correct and sleazy and might inspire the “wrong” thoughts in men considering buying such material. It would be bad for business.
Even the term porn is less and less offensive to people. I remember when calling something “pimp” as a compliment came in vogue which I thought was revolting because when I think of someone as a pimp I think of a grown man who keeps often under aged girls drugged up and sells them to other men and beats them whenever he feels like it. And don’t forget they also call strip clubs “Gentlemen’s Clubs” and call strippers “Dancers”. I was dancing at a show and one of the band member’s girlfriends was a stripper. I asked why she wasn’t dancing to show support and she told me she can’t dance. I said “but you’re a stripper” and she told me that’s totally different. If a stripper will say she can’t dance I don’t know why everyone else insists on calling what they do dancing. Anna Pavlova is rolling in her grave.Just like the “porn industry” can never, ever call itself that. It instead chooses the completely false and totally misleading “Adult Entertainment Industry.”
