Please give me biblical proof that sola scriptora and sola fida (sorry for the mispellings) are completely Biblical.

I’ve heard many stories about how supposedly Catholicism isn’t biblical (I’m finding that to not be true), so someone explain to me how Protestantism is?

I grew up Catholic, but didn’t know anything about the faith. After college I learned about Jesus and was “saved.” However, I now feel the Holy Spirit guiding me to the True Church that the apostles started guided by Jesus.

There isn’t any. For sola scriptura to be biblical, there has to be references in the Bible as to what needs to be in it. Which is also circular reasoning and if it did exist, it would prove the Bible to be fallacious just in itself.

So there isn’t. Sola scriptura implies circular reasoning.
I understand you probably know all this anyways, but want the Protestants to respond instead, but perhaps someone can try to prove this wrong as well.

As for Sola Fide, well google it =)

I know this post has only been up for a little over 12 hours, but not one response that is going to defend sola scriptora…

Your making my decision easy…🙂

Well I guess if Sola Scriptura is correct then II Thessalonians 2, 14 would be incorrect then.

Therefore, brethren, stand fast; and hold the traditions which you have learned, whether by word, or by our epistle. [2Thess. 2, 14 DRB & Latin Vulgate]

So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught, whether by word of mouth or by letter from us. [2Thess 2, 15](modern Bibles i.e. New American Standard Bible, King James Version, etc.]

The Latin Vulgate and Best know English Translation Douay Rheims Bible has:
And in all seduction of iniquity to them that perish; because they receive not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. Therefore God shall send them the operation of error, to believe lying: [2Thess. 2, 10]

The Modern Bibles [2Thess. 2, 10-11] is that of the above broken into two verses. Thus the modern bibles have an extra verse.

We all know that St. Paul is correct though.

Your quote describes my story, in nutshell. C’mon home!

If it was always by scripture alone you wouldn’t have Jesus saying things like:

Matthew 5:21 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:

Matthew 5:22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

So there is a hard and fast rule about not murdering, but then a tradition by Jesus of not even hating in your heart for no good reason as related to that Law.

As a former Lutheran, one of the things that turned me away from Luther’s theology was his hypocrisy. One of his great mottos was sola scriptura, yet he, by his own authority removed books, commonly known as the apocrypha to Protestants, from the Bible. His lack of historical evidence in this matter showed me Luther was simply angry at Scripture because it contradicted his theology, what a heresy! He also spoke hateful words on the book of James, because of its verse that “faith without works is dead.” Tradition came before the New Testament and is justified in the NT:

St. Paul states: “stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by letter” (2 Thess. 2:15).

Jesus told his disciples: “He who hears you hears me, and he who rejects you rejects me” (Luke 10:16).

“So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes by the preaching of Christ” (Rom. 10:17).

Paul tells Timothy: “[W]hat you have heard from me before many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also” (2 Tim. 2:2).

Paul illustrated what tradition is: “For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures. . . . Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed” (1 Cor. 15:3,11). The apostle praised those who followed Tradition: “I commend you because you remember me in everything and maintain the traditions even as I have delivered them to you” (1 Cor. 11:2).

Therefore, sola scriptura is simply not correct, the Apostles also had a spoken tradition, which brings light to Scipture. This was an aspect of Catholicism that brought me to “Rome sweet home.”

I would say that if you want the best pro-Sola Scriptura arguments, then you must listen to or read James White’s arguments. His are about as strong as they come from Protestants…

Can you post some up?

My thought is that if you really wanted pro-sola scriptura arguments you’d go to a non-Catholic forum where people who believe in sola scriptura are in abundance.

From James White’s website:

vintage.aomin.org/SS.html

It is way too long to post the entire article. I have read it several times over and while he makes good points and arguments for Sola Scriptura, I do not think SS works in principle–we see the fruit it has brought forth–thousands of denominations (hence the need for the Church and her interpretation).

I would also add that many of the debates I have seen with him (this article is not a debate–it’s more of a hypothetical–another short-coming) fall short of being good for judging the truth of one side over the other. I think specifically of his debate on Papal Infallibility. The Catholic debater missed the chance to make some good defenses…

If not enough people respond to this, then I may ask that this be made into a new thread–for the sole purpose of refuting these arguments made be James White.

Prayers and petitions,
Alexius:cool:

When you divide the solas they make no sense. If you honestly want to understand the five solas, start with “christ alone”.

Just a hint, this is a website devoted to the defense of Catholicism. Not the defense of Protestantism.

This is not to say that you may not ask such questions, but I would suggest that, if you are really interested in answers, you should betake yourself here
