Free markets and the pursuit of wealth have caused globalization. Globalization is the standardization of values, understandings, and ways of life.
  1. Is this natural and good?
  2. What should be the Catholic Church’s response?

The root of globalization is desire for power. Desire for power is a no-no. Its nothing new; it just occurs a lot easier and faster than it used to.

A lot of globalization is rooted in cronyism. That is not the free market.

If there’s one thing we learned from the USSR, it’s that markets cannot be surpressed even by the most totalitarian regime.

I don’t think the Church needs to respond to this overall. They tend to be cautious with what they say. Otherwise, they’ll just say to keep it centered on Christ and to remember the poor when we are talking about economics.

And no, it does not mean sit back and vote left-wing every 2-6 years thinking you’ve done your part.

The UN is guilty of that. They are trying to socially engineer the Second and Third World.

Just say NO.

The response should be:

Measures of wealth are not a proper substitute for what man truly desires.

A man with a dozen chickens in his back yard can be happier than a man with a dozen shares of stock in his brokerage account. And a man with a dozen chickens can better maintain his religion, language, traditions, and family.
