I attend mass at least twice a week and sometimes more now that it is lent which was great. When I was a Protestant because I was able to recieve a blessing but now that I am Catholic is problematic healthwise because I’m also allergic to gluten.
This poses an important question: what do I do? If I have the host every day, it will make me sick. Asking my parish to buy low gluten ones doesn’t seem fair since I am the only one with a gluten allergy. Plus the low gluten hosts aren’t totally safe because they do contain some wheat which is something that I can have on a rare occassion for example the small amount once a week I am ok, but everyday over along period of time will make me sick.
Am I allowed to buy some gluten free wafers and give it to the priest before the mass or should I abstain from it and only have it on Sunday?
In addition, I’m not a big fan of wine which poses another problem. What do I do? I can’t stand the smell of wine and the taste repulses me. Yet its an important element and it is served second and not first. I became Catholic because I found truth in Christ but now I’m facing this new challenge: how do I join my new church family in communion when I have a gluten allergy and I can’t stand the taste of wine? I know I need to pray about it but still. I’m new to the church and I don’t know what to do.
Can someone please help me.
Thanks SG
