Can we as christians go to dance clubs?
I recently went with a group of friends as part of a birthday celebration. I only had a a couple of drinks and didn’t get drunk or do any immoral dancing. I just had a good time relaxing and dancing with good friends. Is there anything wrong with going to clubs just to unwind and not take part in the other immoral things going on?

Occasional attendance is probably OK under the circumstances , but if you were to go regularly then you would start to absorb the hedonist culture and lifestyle. Most of the guys are there to perve at the girls and pick-up and I suspect it is the same with the girls. I reckon these are places to avoid. I’d also be asking what constitutes a “good friend”. Is a good friend going to be leading you into this kind of activity and culture?

Catholics have never been killjoys or legalistic “thou shalt notters”. So I for one will not say that it is wrong, but it could be wrong if you had a wrong intent or if a wrong intent developed down the track. Also even if you thought that you were putting yourself into an occasion of sin then it would also be wrong for you to go.

Another important question is to examine the people in the group. If there is a young Catholic who is feeling guilty about going to the nightclub but is going along because of peer pressure, then I think it would be appropriate to urge them not to go and to keep them company by not going either. It’s very important that we are not party to someone breaching their conscience and sinning.

I used to go, but I don’t go anymore, because of the whole atmosphere… even if you don’t participate in it, there’s still so much alcohol, immoral dancing, music with immoral themes/swearing, etc… I guess it just got tiring for me and I think there are many other ways to unwind. I personally wouldn’t recommend for anyone to go to a club. It can also be an occasion of sin.

I go dancing once every month or two. I don’t see anything wrong with going out and having a good time. If you are going “trolling” and looking for a hook-up then that is different. If you are going, just to dance, and have fun, that I see no harm in it.

There is no rule that says you have to drink or get drunk when you go out. I usually have a couple beers, but I also sweat alot, so I drink water as well to stay hydrated.

The bottom line for me, is not where you go, but how you conduct yourself while you are there. Going out to the movies is not sinful, however, going to the movies and sitting in the backrow and making out for 2hours is. Conduct yourself appropriately and you will have nothing to fear.

Just so long as you don’t paint all clubs with a broad brush (and this is coming from someone who doesn’t go to them either). 😛

See this type of thinking can apply to not just clubs but to all places in general. I personally employ it myself (in my case, it would be MMORPGs were the atmosphere, outfits, and behavior can be just as a turn-off to sensitive religious folks as clubs can be :P).

Remember that anyone with too much time on their hands and a desire to control peoples actions can make anything sound sinful.

Knock yourself out. Have a good time, just don’t randomly hook up with anyone.

(Caveat-I don’t do the club scene anymore)

I’ve never been to a club, but from my understanding there are different kinds and each has their own atmosphere. The ones that have drugged-up half-naked men and women performing dances that are basically simulated sex acts to a sex-drenched to a soundtrack that drops f-bombs 30 times per song…those are the ones to avoid.

I’ve found that the more I stayed away from sin, the more I noticed it in things that had never bothered me much before. For instance, there were TV shows I no longer felt comfortable watching because noticing what was really in them made it more disgusting than enjoyable. Over time you may come to feel the same way about clubs. If it happens, don’t ignore it - your conscience might be trying to tell you something.
