If God is so “near” to the brokenhearted, why doesn’t he just heal them? Seems kind of pointless and even cruel to refuse to heal someone especially when he’s quite capable of it…

Who says he doesnt heal them? Our idea of healing is so limited. Pain and suffering is healing. What appears to be healing for the body/mind in this world is not necessarily healing for the soul to be taken as a treasure to the next world. Pain/suffering ‘heals’ our soul by causing it to ‘learn’ and or ‘grow’ and so gain virtues which pile up as treasures in the next world. We develop spiritually by the trials in this life even and in fact more so, if they are not pleasant. Often in the Bible this is referred to as trials of fire like gold or silver being tried. I am not very good with words so hopefully this makes sense. Even getting an illness or old age and in fact approaching death are these trials and if we realise what they are and approach them with gratitude and humility then we will see how God is there to help us all the way through and we are never alone. That is what is meant by God being near to the broken-hearted, He is actually never nearer to any than to the suffering, any suffering.

I once reached out to God and He showed me a little of how our reality is an illusion and by doing so He showed me that He was real. That changed everything.

It meant that this ephemeral material world should not be my concern and that I should concern myself primarily with spiritual gains. We have the potential for eternal life where no one dies and a chance to meet our loved ones again and dwell with God forever. Why then should I be broken hearted at the loss of a temporary mortal love, and if I have loved a spouse deeply and lost them, well we will meet again of that I’m sure. These thoughts may help bear some pain. And they are based on a belief that I was given, the best gift I was ever given.

Remember that children’s song “Row, row, row your boat gently down the stream”?

It ends with the lyric “Life is but a dream.“

God wants what is best for you. Ultimately, He wants you to go to heaven and to enjoy it the most you can. He wants what is best for others too. He wants to maximize the number of people in heaven and their enjoyment there and minimize the number of people in hell and their suffering there and still allow people to exercise their free will. The only reason God doesn’t heal your heartbreak is because He foresees potentially even great good for you and others resulting in your obedient acceptance of the heartbreak, than would otherwise result from His healing your heartbreak. Think about the suffering Jesus accepted in loving obedience to God and the great good that resulted for Himself and for the rest of mankind.

God himself experienced heartbreak
Probably experiences it a lot everyday when people have false ideas about him or leave him
He also experiences our heartbreaks with us and Jesus felt many heartbreaks in his life.

He does heal us of it but in His time.
When we are broken hearted we are like Jesus was.
When we are broken hearted we usually talk to God
Even if we are angry and yelling at Him as to why is lets us feel this way
We aren’t ignoring Him

It’s not an easy thing to accept (I’m heartbroken right now actually)
My heart finds it hard to grasp how this could be any good but my mind knows it is the case

Be persistent when you pray and try your best to trust and hope in God
Maybe the heart “breaking” is so the He can “fix” your heart’s attention back to Him
The One who knows, made, and loves your heart

I probably should take own advice on this topic too

Thanks but it gets kind of tiring to want to pray, especially when you’ve had to live with heartbreak all your life.

I don’t know what nature of heartbreak you’ve had to live with all your life obviously.

Sometimes we can help God to help us if we try to put ourselves outside of our normal orbits. Perhaps things might change or improve for you if you alter your routine, maybe change your habits slightly, go to some new places and try some new things. As we are highly social creatures we naturally need to interact with others, have you tried putting yourself into some new situations in order to meet new people at all?

Forgive me if I’m totally wrong about your troubles.

I understand
I was trying and trying to pray and over come sin

The constant heartache on top of it made me angry at times

But i just have a trust that I just need to try my best and to get to heaven

If I can get that
I’ll understand it all and be perfectly happy eternally
I’ll be repaid

At a recent Bible study, we were asked what is your favourite verse? A lady said Psalm 34…

18, The Lord is close to the brokenhearted
and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

I asked her why, because she always seemed happy, she had a good marriage and a good job. She said, there was a very dark time in her life; when she suffered a deep depression and Psalm 34 gave her the hope that pulled her through.

No it’s not exactly a ‘social’ problem, although I appreciate your suggestions and would try some of them out. Just frustrated with some of the sorrows in my life.

Healing isn’t the same as waving a magic wand. You may have heard the expresion -
" He brings you to it to bring you through it "
God may be walking people through situations to help them not to make the same mistakes again .
Suffering is inevitble in this life Its character building.

Hmm, I’m not sure how much I believe that expression or the rationale behind it. Thanks though.

God is nearer to us than our very breath. And we are intricately bound to one another, though this can be so hard to see at times. God does not sit back at a distance and watch us suffer. He is with us, in us, working through us. We are to bring healing to one another. We are God’s action in the world. Unfortunately, as fallen creatures, we fail one another. We are broken. We are victims of chance and disease and decay. But God is in the thick of it and will pursue us down the years, as long as it takes, to bind us to Him.

Saint Teresa of Calcutta talked about her darkness of soul being caused, paradoxically, by God’s closeness. He was so close, it was as though she stood in his shadow.
