As Christians, particularly as Catholics, how are we supposed to deal with the Old Testament conception of God that, if taken literally, is seemingly evil. My faith in the Old Testament as Scripture is contingent upon my understanding that we do not have to believe in a literal translation of it at all times in all places. Otherwise, we’d have to believe that God killed 42 children because they called a prophet baldy (2 Kings 2:23-24), which I refuse to believe actually happened by God’s decree.

So how are we supposed to understand God in the Old Testament?
