We constantly hear people state, “God sent His only Son because He loves us to so much”…“God sent his only Son Jesus for our salvation.”

However, Jesus IS God. God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are all part of the Trinity. Therefore, how can God possibly send His son when his son is actually himself.

So didn’t God actually send himself to earth?

They are realy distinct Persons, as the Father’s offspring, the Son must be really distinct and it follows that since the generation is eternal, the distinction is eternal too and does not belong simply to the ‘economy’. They are separate persons of one substance, the same way as your son is a separate person of the same substance. The difference with God is that there was not a time when the Son was not-- he is eternally begotten of one being with the Father. That is to say that unlike a human being, who has a son, the son is begotten in time, but the Father’s Son is eternally begotten, eternally with Him.

In Jesus there are two natures but one person, the one person of Jesus, the eternal Word, the Son of God. When Jesus wept at the tomb of Lazarus, who wept? God wept, but in His human nature.

Athanasius is brilliant on this if you want to understand it better, he explains the Son as the stream running from the source that is the Father and the brightness of the Fathers light, hence anyone who sees the Son sees the Father because of the Son’s belonging to the Father’s substance and because of His complete likeness to the Father.

Thank you for the reply. It gave me a proper idea of the concept now. 👍

The Father, Son and Holy Spirit are three seperate Persons. Seperate, like you and me. The Father and Holy Spirit sent the Son. The idea that They are the same “person” is a false idea called Modalism. This idea was started by Sabellius.

if you read the bible carefully, all four gospels spells this out, however, i personally find John is a bit more direct on the subject. you might want to find a quiet place and read it, again.
