Why did God tell Jeremiah to stop praying for the people of Israel?

Why did God tell Jeremiah to stop praying for the people of Israel?
They were up for a chastisement.

Jerimiah 14
10 Thus saith the Lord to his people, that have loved to move their feet, and have not rested, and have not pleased the Lord: He will now remember their iniquities, and visit their sins. 11 And the Lord said to me: Pray not for this people for their good. 12 When they fast I will not hear their prayers: and if they offer holocausts and victims, I will not receive them: for I will consume them by the sword, and by famine, and by the pestilence.

Sometimes when we are invested in people, or a situation we can lose sight of God’s overall plan. It becomes difficult, making it almost impossible for us to live our lives as God would have us live. That means letting go of that situation, allowing somebody who is not quite so close to pray or care for them.
It is the reason that doctors don’t care for their own family members, but may be asked to step aside in a traumatic situation so another professional can step in and take over.

God will never forget His Covenant with His People. He is constantly calling them with His love. Jeremiah is part of the Isaelite community making what he sees happening very painful. It is as much for Jeremiah as for any other reason that God would ask Him to stop praying.
When we have done all we can do, God asks us to let go, and trust Him to take over the reins.

Jer 14:10-12
“Yahweh considers the repentance expressed as insincere and transitory (cf. Hos 9:9) and does not accept it.” Section 494c
