I would like to become a godmother. If you can help, please let me know by posting and I can fill you in with more details. Thank you.

You have to be a practicing Catholic and be ready with a letter of recommendation from your parish priest, or otherwise a priest who can vouch for you. At a christening, you are asked if you are prepared to take over the duty of raising that child in the faith should something happen to the parents, so it is definitely not something to be taken lightly.

Thank you. the problem is that I am a practicing Catholic but have never been asked by friends or family members.

I would speak to your priest about your willingness to sponsor a child at their baptism.

He can put you in touch with couples who maybe don’t have local family or friends who would be suitable (or willing) to serve as a Godparent to their children.

There have been several posters on this board who are in that very predicament and are looking for a suitable and orthodox person to sponsor their child’s baptism, so it does happen!

I pray that you have your prayers answered.

You need a magic wand and a couple of mice…
hehehe…that’s cute.
i never thought about this until now, but are there any problems with being the godmother of a non-catholic child. i ask because i have a little goddaughter who is not catholic, if forget what religion, but i think it’s one of those non-denominational ones.

Maybe you will be a Godparent, but maybe God is calling you to care for/ mentor a child in another way. It may be good to talk to your priest or DRE about other ways to be involved at the parish as well.

A lot of RCIA directors would love to snap you up and keep your willingness to serve in their back pocket 😉

They often do the baptismal preparation classes, too, and the scramble for godparents is very difficult at times.

Speaking of RCIA…you could also be a sponsor there if you wanted to be involved in an adult entering into the Church.

I would just second what Shiann said and call your parish to let them know you’re reading and willing to be a godparent if needed.
