Godparents to more than one sibling?

Can anyone give me the ‘unofficial’ guidlines for a sponsor for Baptism? I do not believe there is a cannonical impediment to being the godparent to the first born child and then also the 2nd born. How strong is the ‘recommendation’ that each child in a family have separate and distinct godparents?

There is no such requirement that siblings have separate Godparents. In fact, it’s quite common for this to happen. There is not even any recommendation that children have different Godparents. The parents cannot be Godparents to their own children–that’s the closest I can come to imagining why someone would tell you this. Even under the old 1917 code of canon law, it was very common to have one Godparent for many siblings.

I suggest you approach the person who told you this and ask for some canonical justification.

The three of us siblings have the same godmother… my father’s aunt. She was also my father’s godmother, so that covers a span of her being godmother to us from 1914 to 1960.
 
All of my kids have the same godparents. If we have anymore, they would have the same godparents, God willing. 🙂
