Was it God’s Covenant with Moses that led to the need for Jesus to die on the cross? What if Jesus would have been accepted by the high priest of Jerusalem, would that have satisified the Covenant?

The catalyst for the need for Jesus to die on the cross was the original sin of our first parents, Adam and Eve. That is why the first promise of the coming Messiah is understood by Christians to have been given in Genesis 3:15 (often called the Protoevangelium or “First Gospel”):

I [God] will put enmity between you [the serpent] and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church (389) notes:

The doctrine of original sin is, so to speak, the “reverse side” of the Good News that Jesus is the Savior of all men, that all need salvation and that salvation is offered to all through Christ. The Church, which has the mind of Christ, knows very well that we cannot tamper with the revelation of original sin without undermining the mystery of Christ.
