I was just reading Deus Caritas Est, and in it it described how in Hosea, God is turned against Himself, His love is turned against His justice. How can this be? I thought Love and Justice are God! How can God struggle with Himself, if He is indeed perfect, and the attributes which are described? It is like how He regrets having sent the Flood, how is this possible? What am I missing?

I’m not familiar with Deus Caritas Est and I can’t answer this mystery entirely. A human parent must discipline a child if they love them, right? They wouldn’t being doing any justice by their child if they let them get away with murder, would they?

Have you heard parents use the phrase “this is going to hurt me more than it hurts you”?

Peace,

Ryan 🙂

I think you are giving us your own misstatement. Can you cite the verse where it says that :“God is turned against Himself”?

Please don’t take this wrong, but If you are having trouble getting answers, perhaps it is because people aren’t going to waste their time correcting your misstatements. You will do a lot better if you give accurate citations and give the reference to the citatio so we can check it against the document.

“My heart recoils within me, my compassion grows warm and tender. I will not execute my fierce anger, I will not again destroy Ephraim; for I am God and not man, the Holy One in your midst” (Hos 11:8-9). God’s passionate love for his people—for humanity—is at the same time a forgiving love. It is so great that it turns God against himself, his love against his justice. Here Christians can see a dim prefigurement of the mystery of the Cross: so great is God’s love for man that by becoming man he follows him even into death, and so reconciles justice and love.”

What’s wrong with internal conflict? How does this show (name removed by moderator)erfection? Creativity and free will allow for a lot of options. He didn’t have to flood us. God can do all things. When placed with the option of to flood or not to flood either way God is right. Just because He regretted doing something it does not mean that He would not have done it. God could always just make it not have happened or Undo what has been done. He can do anything.

Can’t regret mean to feel sorry for having to do something or having done something. We can feel sorrow over the right thing to do but must do it anyway. This presents a struggle. Christ asked for God to take the Passion from Him. He struggled deep within but His resolve was not His Will but the Father’s Will be done.
