Is there anything really wrong with referring to God as “she”? I know it would be unusual, but is it wrong? After all, God isn’t specifically male or female, but we refer to Him as male (case in point). And since female isn’t a lower title than male, I don’t see why there’d be anything wrong with it.
Thoughts, anyone?

The Bible and Jesus have both told us that God is our Father. The Lord’s Prayer says it. So how would He be called she then?

…other than it’s not traditional, it’s not scriptural, nor is it logical…

hey, if you want to, knock yourself out…

Peace:thumbsup:

Jesus, has one Mother, Mary. God is the Father.

In the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Not the Mother, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Jesus refers to God as “Father” many many times.

Fathers are usually male, I think…

But I hear some Episcopal churches are going for “Our Parent, who is in heaven.” Now that just sounds wishy-washy.

We know nothing of God except what He has revealed, and He has chosen to reveal Himself in the three persons of the Holy Trinity, as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. To presume to assign a feminine pronoun to the Supreme Being, creator of the universe, is to deny His revelation, and to deny the actual meaning of the concepts masculine and feminine, and therefore to deny our own human natures and identities, which are devined by those concepts.

The male pronoun is how He has chosen to present Himself in scripture. Who want to argue with Him ?

Right - while we could see fit to call God our Parent, when –

Jesus calls Him His Father and Our Father

When God says “I am your Father”?

are you SURE you want to go down this path? 😉

This is not our rules, our decisions - it is GOD’s.

bingo.

beautifully put.

Interesting (name removed by moderator)ut, all.
For the record, I have no intention of referring to God as “she”. I was simply curious becuase there’s a song I particularly like (“Counting Blue Cars” by Dishwalla–one of the more obscure hits) that refers to God as “she”/“her” and I was wondering if there was anything really wrong with that.

“She” is wrong, “it” is wrong, but claiming He’s male in the human sexual style is wrong, as well. Both man and woman are made in His image.

“Our Parent?”

I’ve never understood Christians who felt they were better informed than Jesus.

**Genesis 1:27 %between% **
Code:
27 So God created man in his own image,
   in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.
Words from the first chapter of the bible aren’t good enough for you? It seems obvious that God created us in “His” image - which is male and female.

There wouldn’t be anything inherently wrong with listening to the song, as long as you didn’t believe God was female.

Well, first of all, I agree completely that if Jesus called God “Father”, that is good enough for me.
But I think it is only fair to point out that although, in our age of the “political correctness police”, we don’t always remember it, in English, “he” is not just the masculine pronoun; it is also the, as it were, “generic” one. That is, when you have a person (as God is a Person), who is not specifically identified as being female (as, again, God), that “he” is the correct English form to use…
(As I say, this is just another of those things that has gotten too, too “P C” for me).

I don’t think God would approve of Jesus having two mommies, lol.
No, God should not be referred to as “she”, which is what rainbow slashers are evidently doing.

Saint Paul says somewhere that the chief work of the Holy Spirit is that we can call God ‘abba,’ meaning ‘father.’

Hey, whoa! (puts hands in the air) I never said I thought God should be called “she”, and I agree with everything that you guys have been saying. Words from Genesis are absolutely hunky-dory for me. As I said, I have no interest in swapping pronouns around for the sake of political correctness, just being weird, or whatever.

Another question just popped into my head: I remember hearing that God is both male and female (that is, He posseses the qualities of both). Is this correct, or is He above having gender at all?

It would seem to me that gender exists to enable people to more perfecly image the Trinity, and only imperfectly at that. Thus in marriage, the two become one flesh.

So that means that gender and sexuality was created for us to become more like God. It would seem that He is above this. He doesn’t need gender to become more like Himself.

Just me spit-balling. I would happily accept correction if any can offer it.
