Going to a bar

The message in your post seems very clear, concise and applicable. It’s simple: Reputable people don’t go to clubs or bars (very few like Cheers)!!! Reputations are ruined. Some based upon the very idea “of going to a bar and/or a club.” The club and/or bar carries its own connotation. You used the term “sexualized.” That’s a very appropriate description for the attendees at a bar or club. Attending with a “friend,” going to “listen to the music” or going to “have a drink” are all lame excuses.
Reputable people don’t like to have a drink and don’t like to dance? I’m an old married lady, DH and I on occasion like to have a drink. and/or dance.

To the OP, you can’t control what other people do. If your friend found it appropriate to hook up at a bar, he could find it also appropriate to hook up at the bowling alley, or park. I don’t think it’s your fault.

yeah that wasnt what i was going for. i was just pointing out that different bussiness promote different activities and that there is a difference between a ‘bar’ ‘club’, and ‘dancehall’. and that people generally know what to expect where they are headed.

BTW Saint Augustine “hooked up” (is that what we’re calling it now?) before his conversion with a “Sheila” in church. and he left her high and dry and pregnant! Does that mean if you took your friend to Mass and he met somebody that would be a sin? Would it be a mortal sin for you to take your friend to Mass. Gee we hope not. You are being a little hard on yourself. God gave your buddy free will and surprise they let “Sheilas” in bars everywhere now. They let em go pretty much anywhere. If you feel the need to go to confession, go for it! Confession never hurts even if you don’t have any major mortal sins and as I said earlier the priest’ll sort it all out, that’s why they get the big bucks.😃

Let’s just get to the duck’s guts of this. The Joe Bloggs down under loves a good bender at the pub with the blokes, especially after we’ve been flat out like a lizard drinking all week. Fair crack of the whip, I’ll be stuffed if you yanks aren’t the same. If your out and take a gander at some chick and then this sheila comes up to you for an ear bash, you should be there with your ears flapping. You just need to be careful that once you’ve smacked down a few schooners, that you’re not so off your face that you hook up with someone who has a face that looks like a kicked in sh!t tin, or she’s a few kangaroos loose in the top paddock. Otherwise she’ll be apples. Anyway, if you feel uncomfortable where you are, pull up stumps, say hooroo to your friends and head home. Sure I’ve woken up at sparrow’s fart and felt as dry a dead dingo’s donger, but I’ve had a ripper time and no sin was involved. 😉

This post made me smile.

I think the term is Sheilas. Guys in Australia are called blokes.
That’s what I thought, but then I wasn’t sure if that was a vulgarity or not. I’m afraid somethings we say would be crude if you said them elsewhere, and vice versa. Blokes, huh? Maybe mates, too, or is that more England?

Here in South St. Louis, we say “youse guys” whether we’re referring to the male or female of the species.

I was doing fine until the “apples” and the sparrow lost me completely, however I’m pretty sure I agree with what you said. I think.

After you’ve had a few drinks and a beautiful woman comes up to you for a chat, you’re generally not thinking straight anyway.
Possible near occasion of sin, then?

Me too. 😃

Interesting, methinks, the differences in two or more countries separated by a common language. 😉 “I’m just dying for a fag” means something quite different in the US and GB, no?

However, to address the OP’s question, no sin involved if there’s no intent. Some things you just gotta learn, and one of them is that many bars and clubs exist for the purpose (other than making money for the owners) as a place to “hook up” i.e. what we used to call a “meat market”. A little dash of suds, a cocktail or two, inhibitions are lessened, and quite often one has regrets the next morning…or even longer.

Some bars are for eatin’, drinkin’ and watching sports. Some bars and clubs are for hookin’ up. Good to keep in mind that the amount of imbibition of alcohol and the inhibition of good sense are inversely related.

Quite right mate. i had a buddy that like to pretend he was Brittish and got himself in a bit of trouble asking a truck driver for a fag instead of asking for a “ciggie” even though that’s a bit more cockney. This can also be true in one’s own country. I also remember meeting a guy from Kentucky years ago who was quite disappointed when young ladies here asked him if he wanted to “boogie” since, apparently there it was not to go somewhere but, to have sex.

You got that right, kiddo. I didn’t do this right. This is daeve (aka Debby) saying this in the middle of what someone else said.

Imbibition? Is that a word? You’re definitely right, but is it a word? and this is Debby too.

actually according to wikipedia it is but, i doubt one would do it in a bar since it seems to have something to do with plants. I believe the word the poster was looking for was imbibation a noun derived from the verb to imbibe.

yeah, I’m not sure it is a real word, but it fit the sentence nicely. 😃
