Saint Michael, the archangel, defend us in battle, be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil, may God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do you, O’ Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God thrust into Hell Satan and all the other evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.

Amen.

Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.

Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.

Amen.

For Help in Trials

Most holy apostle St. Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the name of the traitor who delivered your beloved Master into the hands of His enemies has caused you to be forgotten by many. But the Church honors and invokes you universally as the patron of hopeless cases–of things despaired of. Pray for me who feels so hopeless. Make use, I implore you, of that particular privilege accorded to you of bringing visible and speedy help where help is almost despaired of. Come to my assistance in this great need, that I may receive the consolations and succor of heaven in all my necessities, tribulations and sufferings, in particular (redbetta, and that I may bless God with you and all the elect throughout eternity. I promise you, O Blessed St. Jude, to be ever mindful of this great favor, and I will never cease to honor you as my special and powerful patron, and to do all in my power to encourage devotion to you. Amen.

For wisdom and safety, both.

I second what Reepicheep says and please remember you don’t get brownie points in God’s eyes by volunteering for things (except small things) - only for being yourself.

(Also ask yourself - how did your mum get mixed up in this and is she justified in her “views”?

If you lose the price of your plane fare, your mum will have to dig into her purse. Make her learn from it.)

🙂

Redbetta:

You know these people and I don’t, so keep that in mind when you read my question.

Do you trust them?
They said you would travel in company. Now it turns out you must travel alone.
They said they would pick you up at the airport. Now they say they can’t and it has to be strangers who do so.
You said in your post that other people describe you as looking like you were about to be executed.
You told them you won’t let yourself be picked up by strangers. They haven’t replied.

I think you really need to ask yourself:*** do ***you trust them?

At minimum I advise that you should not get on that plane at all unless you get a promise from them that yes, someone you know will be there at the airport.
They finally did reply late last night and are sending two people from the group to meet me. It will be in a hotel bus that will be transporting other people who are staying at the hotel.

What are brownie points and what does my mom and her “views” have to do with anything? I don’t really understand your post. Thanks for the prayers anyway.

“Brownie points” is an expression for the idea of trying to win someone’s approval by doing things they’ll like, especially if you go looking for things to do for that purpose.

Suppose a beggar asks two people for money.

One person gives money because the beggar is hungry and needs the money to buy food.

The other does it because his father is watching and “Daddy will be happy with me if I do this”. He might not do it if “Daddy” wasn’t watching.

The second person in my example is trying to earn brownie points with his father.

From what part of the world is this expression used? I have not heard it here in the American Midwest before.

So, I signed up to go to Guatemala for a week to do volunteer work with a charity group and I am flying tomorrow. First, my mom told me that I would be on the flight with someone else from the group, but that got screwed up and now I am flying by myself when I’ve never done that before. Then, the people from the group who said would pick me up at the airport to take me to the hotel said that they can’t and will be sending hotel staff to get me. I emailed them saying I am not getting into a car with people I have never seen before in a dangerous country.

So, this whole week I have barely slept and people at home and the place I volunteer at have noticed I look like someone about to be executed. These people who promised me they will pick me up still have not emailed me back and I just got back from Confession in case I get killed by drug cartels. Pray I get back home safely.
Guatemala is a beautiful country with beautiful people. I did a 12 day mission trip with my diocese (which has established a relationship with the diocese of Huehuetenango…my diocese sends a group every year) and am waiting for the next opportunity I get to go back. It was an incredible experience. I pray it will be for you too.

I made it back into the States Saturday. Someone had a medical emergency on the plane on the way back, so pray for that person. I appear to have contracted some illness while volunteering at the medical clinic. Symptoms began Wednesday and I’m still experiencing them now. Pray that is it just a flu and nothing serious. I did get all my mandatory shots and, a couple people who went the first week of the two-week volunteer event got fevers from being at the clinic, so it is nothing out of the ordinary for this trip.
