Yesterday (Sunday) was mother’s day and on Friday my mother went to the cemetery to visit her mom (my grandmother). I was going to go with her today but she didn’t wait and went by herself on Friday. In my family, my mom is the only one who visits our dead relatives in the cemetery. None of my mother’s sisters visit my grandmother’s tomb and neither do me or my sister. My father is also buried there and many other relatives.
My mother said that my father’s tomb looks all abandoned and she said that for Father’s Day she was going to buy paint and other materials to fix it and make it look prettier. My relatives are buried in Mexico, so the tombs are different than the ones here in the United States. I live in the border, so it’s not like I have to drive many hours to visit the cemetery, it’s only a couple minutes away.
I don’t like visiting the cemetery because, to be honest, I feel like it’s a waste of time. I come from a Mexican culture and people here usually visit their relatives on Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and on November 2nd, Day of the Death. While checking my Facebook page, many friends posted pictures while they were at the cemetery visiting their death mothers. My mother doesn’t say so, but I think this makes her sad because she thinks we are going to abandon her when she dies and not visit her in the cemetery.
What is the Catholic teaching on this? Do we have to visit our dead relatives in the cemetery or praying for them is enough?
