I have made observations that many Italian-Americans wear gold chains with either a crucifix or saint medal. I go to school with a lot of Italian-Americans (no I do not live in Brooklyn, New York, I live in the suburbs of Cleveland, Ohio). I have noticed that us Italian-Americans wear gold or silver chains with a crucifix and/or saint medal more than any other ethnic group that is Catholic, and am curious why. My understanding right now is that it is just a personal choice, but I could be wrong, I would like to know if it is just a personal choice or it is part of our culture back in Italy that was brought to America when Italians first came over from Italy.

Why don’t you ask one of the older Italian people where you live? They would know best about the Italian culture that came from Italy.

Maybe it’s a European thing ? Where I’m from (France), it’s common too. I wear a gold Our Lady medal myself, which was blessed at my baptism.

OP, why so many threads about medals and gold chains? If you like wearing them, wear them. But it is beginning to sound like you are bordering on some kind of obsession or that you are wearing them for others to see and not for true devotion.
