She told a St. Olaf story once…about sneaking out at night and taking her father’s truck to the neighboring town. And she caught their preacher coming out of a bar. The only thing I can remember quoted exactly is:
Rose: “I told him that I wouldn’t tell on him if he didn’t tell on me.”
Blanche: “And did he keep your secret?”
Rose: “Till’ the day he died. Which was three days later. After that we became Lutherans.”
Blanche: “Rose, that was not a teenage rebellion story. That was a changing religion story. That was a who gives a damn story!”
Which one was Rose? Was that Betty White’s character? Or was Rose the Mom of Bea Arthur’s character? If Rose was the Mom, she was probably Catholic because she talked about being Sicilian/Italian from what I recall.
I am certain Rose was Lutheran, and, Dorothy married Leslie Nielson, a relative of Blanche’s. Actually I am glad this was brought up. Just last week I saw Dorothy’s name on another site as Dorothy Petrillo, Zbornak, Hollingsworth and couldn’t remember where the Hollingsworth came from.
Born Bernice Frankel, Beatrice Arthur is one of three children of Philip and Rebecca Frankel and a native of New York City. She is reluctant to disclose her birthdate, which according to Sidney Skolsky is May 13, 1926. During the Depression, when she was about eleven years old, her family, including an older sister and a younger sister, moved from New York to Cambridge, Maryland, where her father opened a clothing store. They were among the very few Jewish residents of that Eastern Shore town. Always tall, the dark-haired girl reached her adult height of five feet nine and a half inches by the time she was twelve. She took refuge from self-consciousness in going to the movies, collecting pictures of Hollywood actors, and daydreaming that she was a small, blonde, beautiful screen star.
My guess would be Luteran, Episcopal or some other more conservative Protestant background. I think if she had been Catholic they would have played it up more with her character. She would have been using Holy Water all the time and going to Confession and praying the rosary.
I used to love that show. I was thinking that Rose was Bea Arther’s Mom, I’m not good with names. But Betty White was Lutheren, although I voted Catholic because of the mixup. I’m sure the promiscuous one was Baptist.
That was a great show! It was so well written!
Bea Arther in real life was of Jewish origins.
I think Dorthy was seriously dating a guy named Stanley.
