Good day!

Let me explain my situation. I have a buddy who is Catholic whose girlfriend is Lutheran. She has felt some hostility from his group of Catholic friends, which she has attributed to intolerance towards her different beliefs. Personally, I am not sure about ALL the hostility and I doubt that the hostility is because of her differing views, but I digress.

My buddy is not pleased with how his girlfriend has been treated by some of his Catholic friends, and he listens to his girlfriend’s point of view. It has led him to question Church teaching. I think he really just needs to claim the faith for himself.

I was just wondering if anyone has any book recommendations for my buddy. I think he just wants to better understand why the Church teaches what it does. But I would also like something that is friendlier toward the Protestant point of view, since I would imagine he would want to share this information with his girlfriend. I have considered Handbook of Catholic Apologetics, but that is over 400 pages…

It might be worth adding that my buddy is VERY well versed in the faith. He is far from a beginner when it comes to Catholic teaching and he almost went to the seminary.

Does anyone out there have experience with books for this situation? Thank you!

I would recommend Alan Schreck’s book Catholic and Christian. It is fairly easy to read and understand and was a great help to me as I explored what the Catholic Church teaches. I think it’s a great starting point for almost anyone.

Thanks for the info! It looks good. My one reservation is that it was written in 1984. By any chance, is there anything more recent?
