Can anyone recommend a good book on the various men who have been the Bishop of Rome? I’m looking more for a history of what the popes have done than a history of the papcy itself which is more broad and theological. I was in a discussion with someone who talked about popes in the middle ages having their own armies and killing people and I realized how limited my historical knowledge of individual popes is. THANKS!
