?Good Book on Selfishness/Suffering?

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone knows of any good Catholic Books about one or all of the following:

-Learning not to be Selfish
-Learning how to Suffer
-Controlling Anger

I really stuggle in these areas, and I can’t afford Catholic Counseling.

Any help would be very much welcome. I feel helpless!

It’s hard what to know what to say. We can read/do the same things, and depending on our experience, faith, willingness, honesty, and humility the results can differ.

Here are books I have read over the past 3 years and I pray the Divine Office Daily.

Varities of Religous Experience (not Catholic)
The Confessions
Vintage Spiritual Classics: St. Francis, St. Thomas More, Desert Fathers, St. Ignatius’ Spiritual Exercises, St. Benedict’s Rule, An Introduction to the Devout Life by St. Francis De Sales.

The Gospels
Job

The Divine Office

There’s so much more too.

Once we become truly a debtor to God’s grace, things really begin to turn around quite rapidly. All the “stuff” begins to fall to one side.

Getting Free
both by Bert Ghazzi
are excellent for breaking free of destructive habits, for exploring the root causes of anger, selfishness and other vices, and applying spiritual means to attack them.
Fr. Groeschel also has several books on such topics, Healing the Original Wound is one of his best.

I’ve struggled with some of the same problems! I just finished a nifty booklet (published by TAN, which produces some of the best Catholic books available, and at reasonable prices – no, I don’t work for them! ) that discusses St. Therese and doubles as a novena to her. She suffered a lot and found spiritual joy in it through Our Lord. So, you might want to get the booklet at your local Catholic bookstore or online (I’ve put the link below), read it, and offer it for the intentions that you stated. I just said a prayer for you.
