Good books on Catholic beliefs

So far I’ve found two very good books which teach about our beliefs. The first does have the Imprimatur. The second was reviewed for accuracy by his priest but not a bishop. I hope one day it will be.
  1. Catholic and Christian by Alan Schreck
    Imprimatur: Most Reverend Albert H. Ottenweller
    A book written to help Catholics and non-Catholics understand the beliefs and where they came from.
  2. Born Fundamentalist Born Again Catholic by David Currie
    A book written by someone who converted to Catholicism. He researched church history and could not escape a belief that the Catholic church was the original church. His family also converted. He explains various Protestant beliefs and how they compare to Catholic beliefs including end times beliefs. It would be great if a Bishop would review this book.
Anyone have any good books they have read? I’m reading “A Concise History of the Catholic Church” by Thomas Bokenkotter now.
 
Loved the Born fundamentalist book. Just finished Salvation is from the jews. I didn’t want the book to end! I was really good. I also need more suggestions on books, maybe about the church fathers.
 
For books about Catholic beliefs, Catholicism for Dummies and The Essential Catholic Handbook. Both have the Imprimatur.

Be careful with Bokenkotter’s book. He does make some questionable comments in regards to the ordination of women, as well as some rather charged statements regarding the Church’s treatment of women. The book isn’t bad in many respects, but it does have some issues. I prefer Fr. Laux’s Church History book.

FYI, the imprimatur doesn’t necessarily mean a bishop read through the book himself. The diocesan censor librorum (usually a priest or qualified lay person) will read the book and give the nihil obstat (or imprimi potest in the case of religious orders) which means the book is free from doctrinal or moral errors. The bishop then grants the imprimatur (“let it be printed”) because he trusts his censor librorum. It doesn’t necessarily mean that the bishop has “reviewed” the book personally or even that he agrees with its’ contents.
 
This is the Faith, has been around for what seems like forever, but only from the late 50’s which is forever to me as I was born in the early 60’s. I remember having this as a child, and I recently bought another copy
The Catechism of the Catholic Church
The Essential Catholic Handbook (which is used in the library on this website–faith tracts comes straight from it) is VERY VERY VERY good.

I went to a Jesuit University and took a Christian Tradition class as part of the theology requirements. One of the books was A history of Christianity…which is a pretty generic title, but was very informative and helped me return to the church after a youthful hiatus.

I suggest you Google “The Marian Catecheist Apostolate” which offers three very solid and completely Roman Catholic Courses which are excellent.

Absolutely… I have bought this in quantity from TAN for apologetics classes… excellent for teen and adults. Open to ANY page and begin reading… and you can learn a lot.

Also, it is available on MP3… the whole book on one CD is great, and all the sections are easy to find with the written index that accompanies the MP3.
