This Christmas, I plan on giving my family a good number of Catholic material including some good Catholic books. The books I plan on giving to my family include, After Virtue by Alasdair Macintyre, for my dad; and Life of Christ by Ven. Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, for my brother. Now for my mother, I want to get her a good book on Our Lady. My mom is mostly just Secular, and believes a lot in the Liberal norm of society, I want a book on Mary, that’s a good introduction to Mariology and Marian devotion for secular people, does anyone know of any good suggestions for such a book?

In general, it is poor form to give people books that they would not ordinarily read or enjoy.

If they are interested, so be it, but likely the book will just sit collecting dust. The books you give should be, at minimum, ones that you know well, too.

That said, Scott Hahn often deals with Marian theology as a convert himself.

Behold Your Mother by Tim Staples is an often recommended one.
"In Behold Your Mother, Tim Staples takes you through the Church’s teachings about the Blessed Virgin Mary, showing their firm Scriptural and historical roots and dismantling the objections of those who mistakenly believe that Mary competes for the attention due Christ alone.

Combining the best recent scholarship with a convert’s in-depth knowledge of the arguments, Staples has assembled the most thorough and useful Marian apologetic you’ll find anywhere.

He also shows how all the Marian doctrines are relevant—even essential—to a salvific faith in Jesus. From her divine maternity to her perpetual virginity, from her Immaculate Conception to her Assumption, the Church’s core teachings about Mary are intertwined with the mysteries of Christ. In a word, Mary matters."

I’ve been thinking of giving her Ven. Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen’s The World’s First Love it seems to be the closest thing to what I’m looking for. However I haven’t the book yet, (though I really want to) and so I don’t know for sure, has anyone else read The World’s First Love? What did you think of it? Would you recommend it as a good book for a Secular person like my mom?

I’m also considering The Marian Option by Carrie Gress, I really enjoyed it, but I’m concerned it might be a tad too Conservative for her, at this stage, what do you think?

That’s what I’m thinking.

Have you family expressed interest in the faith, op? I know that if my friend gave me a book on the faith, I would not really read it, and I’m not that secular, lol.

I don’t know if that’s an appropriate Christmas present, I would give it to her for reading, but it wouldn’t be a gift for Christmas.

If your mom is liberal, a book that focuses on that would be more interesting to her (eg how (insert typical liberal view, like birth control) isn’t liberating). I know I wouldn’t care about Catholicism if my fundamental views weren’t challenged in the first place. She probably needs to be open to Christianity first before she would care about Mary
