Hi Everyone,

Can someone please recommend some good Catholic apologetic books/articles that make use of biblical and patristic evidence (and good reasoning/philosophy) on
  1. Primacy of Rome
  2. Primacy of Peter
  3. Papal Infallibility
  4. Immaculate Conception of Mary
  5. Sinlessness of Mary
  6. Purgatory
  7. Filioque

Alan Schreck’s “Catholic and Christian” subtitled “An Explanation Of Commonly Misunderstood Catholic Beliefs” does a fine job at the topics you listed. He writes in a coherent, and a somewhat uncomplicated way, which I find is accessible to the layperson. It’s a little dated,1984, but the best Catholic apologetics book I have read.

Dear Looking for Home,

Any books by Scott Hahn are excellent sources
Professor of Philosophy, Dr. Peter Kreeft of Boston College.
Father Robert Barron is an excellent source as well as Father John Harding, and Frank Sheed though both are deceased.

These men are all excellent and faithful sources for the information you seek.

Never stop searching, the journey home is so sweet,

  1. Primacy of Rome - Upon This Rock, Steve Ray
  2. Primacy of Peter - Upon This Rock, Steve Ray
  3. Papal Infallibility - Catholicism and Fundamentalism, Karl Keating (also see Tim Staples at Catholic Answers)
  4. Immaculate Conception of Mary newadvent.org/cathen/07674d.htm
  5. Sinlessness of Mary socrates58.blogspot.com/2009/04/straightforward-biblical-argument-for.html
  6. Purgatory - Catholicism and Fundamentalism, Keating
  7. Filioque - newadvent.org/cathen/06073a.htm
These are far from the last words on these subjects, but they are in-depth starting points.

BTW, the socrates58.blogspot.com/ website has to be one of the most in-depth Catholic apologetics sites in existence. It is probable that all these topics are covered there. The only problem is that there is so much information it’s easy to get distracted from the original question!

May God bless you.

You list yourself as Orthodox. If you accept Orthodox teaching on Mary and Eschatology, then there is only need to accept that the Bishop of Rome is the “first among equals” and accept that the Latin Catholics have a valid teaching on the other things, even if you don’t understand it, yourself. If you become Catholic, you would be of the Eastern rite that corresponds to your particular branch of Orthodoxy. Sadly, there aren’t any Eastern Catholic parishes in France known to this list but you would be free to worship in any Catholic church of any rite (although your mother rite might only be available when travelling) and your posterity could retain your Eastern identity in baptismal records.

That list is not comprehensive (about 1/3 of Lebanon is Eastern Catholic but no parishes are listed on ByzCath) so you may have luck if you look in local directories or contact the diocese where you live if they are aware of Eastern Catholic parishes.

Thank you all for your replies and suggestions. These all sound like great starting points. If I finish these though and want some more, does anyone know any books that may be more scholarly or more in depth?

Would Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma by Dr. Ludwig Ott be a good idea? Any other similar or better books?

Yes, Dr. Ludwig Ott’s book has been used to teach seminarians as I understand, and is organized by topic. I also recommend the many books by Cardinal Ratzinger/Pope Benedict XVI. You can search them all by subject. I only have a couple of them, but I am familiar with his work, and doctrinally, he is excellent. His Introduction to Christianity will cover a lot and will be scholarly. His Eschatology book covers end-times, heaven, hell, etc…

Thanks!

What did you mean by the ECFs though? I am guessing reading the Early Church Fathers directly, but just checking
