Can anyone recommend any good Catholic children’s books? Our children are ages 8,7, 2 and 6 months. I attended Catholic grade school k-8 and I now believe I was poorly catechised. My children attend public school because we cannot afford Catholic school, they do attend PSR on Sunday but that is not enough. We want them to know their faith. What books would be best for them? Thank you

For your ages I would also recommend the Fr. Lovasik books. Most Catholic book stores sell them. He wrote books with gorgeous illustrations about the saints, the Sacraments, the Commandments, the Rosary, etc. They are slender books and not too expensive.

As they grow the Vision books on Lives of the Saints will be wonderful and would make good read alouds even now. Bethlehem Books sells exciting faith based historical novels. Also check out Tan Books and Emmanuel Books online. Emmanuel books is a particularly could childrens book resource. It caters mainly to home schoolers but you could make good use of their religion and history sections.

you already have the ignatius press link, which has great kids books on saints, heroes, and just darn good stories. I have to add the Narnia books by CS Lewis, my daughter began reading those aloud to her kids when they were 4 or 5, and the Madeline L’Engle books.

I would give a two thumbs up on Narnia (my kids read them over and over and over), but if you are at all squeamish about New Age stuff, I would preview the Madeleine L’Engle novels (A Wrinkle in Time, etc.). I actually regret now that I let my oldest son read them. I’m sure I will have plenty of people disagreeing with me, but I’m lots more cautious about this stuff as I’ve become more concerned and informed (due mostly to the Harry Potter controversy).

In addition to the Vision Books already mentioned, there is a series of saints stories by Mary Fabyan Windeatt available from TAN (the range of difficulty varies from book to book). Bethlehem Books (a GREAT resource) has a series that includes The Cottage at Bantry Bay that is good for young kids. Sophia Press has one called The Life of Our Lord for Children and The Acts of the Apostles for Children by Marigold Hunt. Neumann Press has some absolutely gorgeous hardcovers for children with short stories about the saints, and also one called Saint Patrick’s Summer (I think) by Marigold Hunt. They have a lot of books for kids.

There is a monthly reader called St. Joseph Messenger that is really nice. They say for ages nine and up (I think that I saw that somewhere). I would say read aloud to an eight year old. Their number is 800-242-9954. I liked it so much that I ordered a year’s worth of back issues. You can read an issue on their website.

Any Catholic homeschooling curriculum provider would be a good resource.

Happy Reading!!
