Hello,

I am aware that within certain perimeters Catholics in the U.S. are required to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Does the Good Friday fast extend all the way to the Easter Vigil as a rule or suggestion? Thank you

We just had this on another thread. It’s a suggestion. Not a rule.

Good Friday ends at midnight tonight. After midnight, you are free to continue the fast through tomorrow to the Easter Vigil as an optional penitential devotion if you wish, but it isn’t required.

I’m not a canon lawyer, liturgist, or anything of the sort (nor do I play one on television) but I believe the Good Friday fast ends at midnight local time on Good Friday night. At least that’s how I’ve always observed it and I’ve never heard anything to the contrary.

Yes, it is only binding until midnight, but the Church encourages (but does not require) the faithful to observe the paschal fast which continues into Holy Saturday until after the Vigil.
