We attended a Good Friday Liturgy tonite in which the priest changed the order of the Liturgy. First we had the Liturgy of the Word, then we had Holy Communion, followed by Veneration of the Cross. Is it allowable for the order to be swapped like this? Shouldn’t Holy Communion be last and the Veneration be second?

Just to clarify for most readers, this “liturgy” is not a mass. It is the Celebration of the Lord’s Passion. There is no Mass on Good Friday.

On this day, in accordance with ancient tradition, the Church does not celebrate the Eucharist: Holy Communion is distributed to the faithful during the celebration of the Lord’s passion alone, though it may be brought at any time of the day to the sick who cannot take part in the celebration. The order that you describe is, however, wrong. (*Liturgy of the Word >> Communion >> Veneration). *

What exactly is being clarified? The original post never referred to a Mass; it correctly referred to the Liturgy of Good Friday.

Many folks equate liturgy to the Mass (read the numerous threads this week asking about Good Friday Mass) . You are correct, the OP did not say it was a Mass, but they also did not say is was not supposed to be either. I simply wanted to distinguish.

There should not have been any distribution of Holy Communion during the Passion. Christ’s body was broken on the cross, it should not be broken twice.

Receiving Him in the Eucharist is an abuse that has crept in. It should not happen, it is not approved neither is it orthodox.

Please do not brand something an abuse with no documentation when there is an abundance of support for the practice of a communion rite in conjunction with the Good Friday service. Clearly, what you are asserting here is not true. See the link to the UCCB wweb site several posts back. An orthodox Good Friday Liturgy includes the distribution of the Eucharist to the faithful. Unless of course you are more faithful [and orthodox and are the liturgical authority for the Church] than the Bishops.

The OP was discussing what would seem to be an improper order of the liturgy, not the inclusion of an invalid distrubution of Eucharist…
