Hello! I am in the process of becoming Catholic so i always have a lot of questions! I would like to attend the Good Friday service at my church, but i didn’t know what to expect. I know that it is NOT a mass.

good friday service is from noon to 3
at our church we have the rosary, the stations of the cross, readings, and such.
not every one stays the whole time, so some people leave early or arrive late.

The outline is:
  • The clergy prostrate or kneel before the altar
  • Prayer (Collect)
THE LITURGY OF THE WORD
  • Readings (I, Psalm, II)
  • Passion according to the Gospel of St. John (18:1-19:42)
  • Solemn Intercessions. These are made in what used to the called the “oratio solemnis” form. The priest first announces an intention, there is a period of silence (which may be introduced by a specific command), and then he prays a Collect. There are 10 such prayers.
ADORATION OF THE HOLY CROSS
  • Veneration of the Cross. This has two forms: the more common practice I think is the first. The priest holds a veiled cross. As he unveils it, he sings “This is the wood of the cross on which hung the Savior of the World” and the response is “Come let us worship”. The unveiling takes place in 3 stages (top, then right, then whole), thus, this invitation is repeated 3 times. Then, beginning with the priest, everyone venerates the cross (e.g. with a genuflection and a kiss- practice varies)
    Some texts that are traditionally sung for the veneration are the Improperia (Reproaches) and the Crux Fidelis (Faithful Cross) . The latest Latin edition of the missal also encouraged the singing of the Stabat Mater or another hymn in honour of the Compassion of the BVM.
    HOLY COMMUNION
  • Holy Communion. The Blessed Sacrament is brought from where it was reserved on Holy Thursday. The Our Father is said with its embolism, as at Mass. The priest says his private prayer of preparation for Communion and then says “This is the Lamb of God”, etc. Communion is then distributed.
  • A Prayer (like a Postcommunion)
  • The priest does not bless, but a prayer for blessing is said over the people.
Many parishes may also have extra-liturgical services such as the Way of the Cross.

Note that you may participate in all other parts, but please do not receive communion. We appreciate your participation in the rest as far as you feel comfortable doing, but don’t feel pressured to particpate in any part that makes you uncomfortable.

WOW!!! -

This part always makes me cry - every single time. And just READING it here has me welling up!!!

Good Friday is always so very emotional for me - I have a feeling this year will be no exception.

rmisch - enjoy the vigil - and remember that Jesus asked if his Apostles could not just spend one hour with Him. Try to spend this time with Him, or all three hours, if you can.
