Why do we call it “Good” Friday when Jesus died?

If the answer is that it’s because that is the day that He saved us from our sins and that’s why it’s a “Good” Friday, then that sounds like it should be a “Holy” Friday even MORE so than the rest of the days of Holy Week.

It is my belief that it’s because the end result was Good – (1 Peter 3:18) “For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit.”

The term “guode friday” first appears in English in the year 1290 (OED). Likely the etymology is from “God’s Friday” as the word goodbye emerged from “God be wy you” in the late 16th Century. The theological “good” of the event is inescapable, however.
