Good mattresses

I’m currently on the lookout for good (and hopefully cheap!) mattresses! I’ve used my fiance’s family’s spare room bed for naps (including after an all nighter) and when I was emotionally upset after my recent family situation, I had crashed in there, too. It’s a Land and Sky mattress they had bought for their grandmother when she was battling cancer and needed a better bed (God bless her soul). It’s one of those latex foam mattress thingies…and it feels SO good! soooo good… I’ve gotten the best sleeps and naps on that bed…👍

And I really want to replace my old mattress I currently have sometime this summer, possibly. My current mattress is an old spring coil one my parents gave me after it was too hard on their backs (they bought a new one). So I’m guessing my mattress is at least 10 yrs old. I can still use it, but on the other hand, my brother’s dog had marked it in a couple of corners (and the box spring is yucky and the frame is all rusty…)

Since Land and Sky is a bit expensive…When fiance’s folks bought the bed for their grandmother, it was a queen sized bed on sale for $1200. It usually is closer to $2000. Now, I can’t afford $2000, but rather spend about $1000 or less. (Fiance is going to help pay, too, since I’m getting a queen size so we’ll have a good mattress already after we’re married. It’s just I’m getting it a bit sooner for myself…)

So, my question is this–do any of you have any good (memory foam or latex foam) mattress recommendations? 🙂 I live near the Nebraska Furniture Mart, and will probably shop there, but wanted an honest appraisal from somebody other than the salesperson…
 
Just so you know…I have heard that memory foam mattresses make the marital relation pretty awkward. :o I’ve never slept on one, so I’m not sure why they are that way. Probably the “shock absorbing” properties.

Not something you are considering right now, I’m sure…but you want to keep it in mind if you are planning to use the bed after you are married!
 
I have a Tempu-pedic mattress that cost a fortune. Since I’ve moved in with my Dad I have a “kid’s” room, and could only get a twin bed, and it was still $1000, and that’s just the mattress, no box spring. My bed used to be part of a bunk bed/loft system, so maybe if there was a box spring it would make it better. But it wasn’t worth the money. It’s ok, but it’s just a mattress. My son says it feels like you’re on the floor, but my daughter-in-law loves it. I’m single so I don’t know about that aspect,
 
The mattress we bought two years ago is divine! We both have back problems so I was looking for something to help with morning back pain. I bought a Sealy King-size pillow-top with a memory-foam middle in the pillow-top portion. I absolutely did not want a full, memory foam mattress after I had lain (laid? layed? :confused: lol) down on it. (BTW -I have heard the same thing about it impairing marital relations!) But the pillow-top with the foam in it is perfect! Just enough to make you feel cozy but the mattress itself is firm! I say to Hubby nearly every night how I love* our bed! We agree we have never had a mattress that made our backs feel so much better in the mornings.

Warning — they can be expensive, but if you think about how many years you will sleep on it, I think it is worth every penny. I bought mine in a store close-out for $1,000 for the set. Look at the independant stores and not a dealership or department store.
 
***You know that old adage, you get what you pay for:o…be careful about skimping when buying mattresses. Your back is at stake! 🙂 I don’t think you need to spend $2k, but somewhere in the $1200 to $1500 range will buy a very durable, and comfortable mattress. We just bought a new mattress after having the same one for about 10 years, it is a Simmons Beautyrest. No one has a fighting chance in this bed to stay awake 😃 You put your head down, asleep in minutes, and I really don’t toss and turn like I used to.

I would look into those, for a queen you can get one for around $1000 (I think), but you have to add in s&h, and set up (if you have the store people send someone to set it up)

I have a Temper-pedic king and a Simmons queen memory foam mattress. I bought my son an off-brand memory-foam mattress as well.

To me they all feel the same. That is to say they are all wonderful! They never seem to wear out our develop “holes”.

Go to Costco, Sam’s Club or some of the warehouse stores, you can often get a pretty deal. I think the queen that I bought for my son was around $900 at Costco.

We just got a Sealy Posturpedic waterbrook plush matress. It is a spring system and memory foam combo. It is very comfortable and we sleep well on it. Our Queen set with a coupon and picking it up ourselves cost $650. Normally in stores with shipping and all it is several hundred more than that. Costco Rocks! We rented a flat bed truck at home depot for $22 and picked it up at the store ourselves. That cut an extra 100+ off shipping and handling. 👍
 
I have bought two mattress sets in the last three years. The first was for a queen size bed, it was a Seally mattress with pillow top, I believe the set (mattress and foundation) were about $600 (delivered). The mattress was fine for the price.

Recently we updated to a king size bed, obviously the queen set would not fit on the new king bed. What we ended up doing is getting two twin mattresses and putting a foam top on them. The whole set was about $75 per twin and $100 for the foam top. All were from Sam’s Club and we had to get them ourselves, which was not too hard since they were twin sizes. HOWEVER, our bed does not require a foundation/box spring. It is from Ikea and has a cedar plank foundation, which was about $100.

That was about 1 year ago and the setup has worked great!👍 It is honestly one of the best/most comfortable beds I have slept on - and it cost less than most queen sets. I would recommend this setup to anyone looking for a twin or king size bed.

As a general rule from my experience is that pillow tops go flat after 2 years or so, but foam toppers seem to stay OK for longer. Also, one should replace the mattress after 5 years as they hold a ton (almost literally) of stuff in them (IIRC a 10yr old mattress weighs double its original weight)

Note: I am a side sleeper and my wife is a back/side sleeper

One good thing about the memory foam is that dust mites and such cannot get in them. It has a 20 year warranty, and they tell me that at that time it will weigh the same as it does right now. If the bed is going to be in a corner, it’s very hard to make. I have to drag the whole mattress off to get that corner of the sheet. This may be a problem on all beds in a corner, but I can’t remember having this much trouble making a bed before.
 
We just got a Tempur-pedic It is heavenly and well worth the cost.

I have a queen-size Serta pillow-top (not memory foam) which is wonderfully comfortable. My mother tried it out when she visited me, and said it was one of the most comfortable beds she’d ever slept in … this is high praise, since she has a lot of trouble sleeping, and a lot of mattresses cause her back to ache.

I got it from a local department store’s semi-annual “truckload sale” for around $350 for the set (mattress + box springs).

So, you don’t necessarily have to pay a huge amount of money for a good mattress, you just need to be a savvy shopper and be on the lookout for a good sale. 🙂 I think if you stick with major brands you’ll be ok. The most important thing is to actually lay on it (don’t just SIT on it, but actually lie down). Stay there for a couple of minutes, even if you feel silly (I did, but I did it anyway. :D). Make the rounds and try them all out, chances are you’ll find a certain one that you keep coming back to, which is probably the right one for you.
