I second* Ivanhoe* by Sir Walter Scott. Amazing novel.

*Cathedral of the Sea *by Ildefonso Falcones takes place in late medieval Barcelona.

If you want to engage with the real deal, read some Dante, Petrarch and other medieval authors. You will not be disappointed. The *Divine Comedy *is amazing, just make sure you have a good translation.

Yes, those are all excellent. I recommend a medieval reader, such as Broadview’s Medieval Period anthology which will contain shorter works, as well.

I like the Brother Cadfael mysteries by Ellis Peters. they are set against the background of the war of succession between Stephen and the Empress Maud (or Matilda). The Brother Cadfael of the title had been a soldier and gone on a crusade, and later in life become a monk in Shrewsbury, where he solves crimes.
The 1st series (4 episodes) is available on Netflix streaming, too.
