Can anyone suggest some good modern Catholic movies? I have seen *The Passion of the Christ *many times. I am also a huge The Lord of the Rings fan, which I realize has a great amount of Catholic symbolism.
Pretty cool movie surrounding knigths in the time of the bubonic plague and heretics, Mr. Boromir plays in it Very violent, but nothing compared to the Passion
Mary of Nazareth is out this weekend, but only in private venues, or if a parish rents out a movie theater to screen it. It will probably come to DVD in late 2014.
Since you didn’t specify how “modern,” I’ll draw the line at 1950.
1953 - I Confess (Hitchcock)
1954 - On the Waterfront
1959 - Ben-Hur
1962 - The Reluctant Saint (about St. Joseph of Cupertino)
1966 - A Man for All Seasons (about St. Thomas More)
1977 - Jesus of Nazareth
1983 - The Scarlet and the Black (about Msgr. Hugh O’Flaherty)
1986 - The Mission (about the Jesuit missionaries in Paraguay)
1988 - Babette’s Feast (lots of Eucharistic symbolism)
2002 - Sant’Antonio di Padova (U.S. title: Saint Anthony: Miracle Worker of Padua)
A movie that surprised me with it’s actual message of faith was “The Rite” with Anthony Hopkins. Seminarian thinks he doesn’t believe and then is sent to Rome to learn about exorcism. It’s got some pretty scary parts, but apparently the author is Catholic and they consulted with a current, practicing, Catholic priest/exorcist.
